This beautifully written (and beautifully translated) book by Sylvie Weil (and Ros Schwartz) is a fictional memoir told in the narrative voice of the author's unborn child. Isaac, miscarried at 7 months gestation, roams the world in search of connection - to his grieving parents, to possible other mothers and to a place of belonging.
He explores his own neighbourhood of the Bronx, New York City, and its diasporic post-Holocaust Jewish community before setting out on a worldwide search. It is a spiritual journey of the soul that references the many journeys, exiles, and displacements that have characterised Jewish history. On the way, this wise and funny wandering being explores both evil and courage, loss, longing and the nature of love. A study in grief and trauma, this is nevertheless a wonderful read - humorous and insightful, it grabs from the first page to last. Read it!
