Come on ladies - give me your ideas

OP posts:

I have just finished Unless by Carol Shields and it was "unputdownable".

suzywong · 23/01/2005 10:04

Ian MacEwan - The Child in Time
in fact anything by him

foxinsocks · 23/01/2005 10:13

The Rotters Club by Jonathan Coe - not normally my cup of tea but I absolutely loved it. Have just finished reading the sequel, The Closed Circle which I thought was good (but not as good as the first one). They are both great reads and I could hardly think of anything else in the days that I was reading them!

Posey · 23/01/2005 19:09

foxinsocks - have you read any of Jonathan Coe's other books? I read one 2 or 3 years ago, loved it so much and have since read everything he's written (except the closed circle which is waiting on my bedside table to be started next)

Will think about other unputdownables and get back to you later.

Oooh... can't wait to watch the Rotters Club on TV this week. The book was great although I didn't realise there was a sequel. I really like Jonathan Coe. All his books are so different.... "The House of Sleep" and "What a Carve Up" are fantastic.

I am in a minority of really enjoying The Little Friend by Donna Tartt.

purpleturtle · 23/01/2005 20:18

I've just read Angels and Demons by Dan Brown (the da Vinci code) which dh was given for Christmas. I couldn't put it down. Fantastic. Am going to start the da vinci code tonight.

My all time favourite is David Guterson's Snow Falling on Cedars, which I've recommended for our book group. Must have read it at least 5 times.

The Woman In Black..by Susan Hill(tres scary do not read on your own)Anything by Margaret Forster..particularly Shadow Baby.
Jane Eyre
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier and also My Cousin Rachel by her.
Phillippa Gregory's books are fun if you like historical stuff.Rather like a modern day Jean Plaidy.
All the Harry Potter books(totally obsessed).
Riders,Rivals,Polo,The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous and there is another one in the series.Great for escapism.

purpleturtle · 23/01/2005 21:06

I love the snow. It gives real atmosphere to the story. It's very well written, which makes it easy to read, and the story is captivating too. I can't really explain why I like it soooo much - we just buy copies for people who haven't read it yet for their birthday. Must have bought about 8 copies over the years.

In a nutshell, Dior, put it on the top of your pile, and let me know what you think!

No don't! - I read I capture the Castle recently, and that's quite lovely too. It shouldn't take long, and you can keep looking forward to the snow.

Touching The Void (joe simpson)
Beloved (Toni Morrison) stunning, moving book
Fugitive Pieces (Anne Michaels)loved it
Lovely Bones (great in parts but yes I agree with another post - a little too schmaltz in parts)
David Copperfield
Great Expectations
Oliver Twist (all three truly wonderful books)
Fingersmith (Sarah Waters) so so so good
Stasiland (Anna Funder)wonderful about the stasi in East Germany
Jane Eyre read it three times at least
The Woman In White (Wilkie Collins)read it three times one of the few books I've read this many times
The Secret History (Donna Tartt?) loved it in 1987
Pride and Prejudice love it always
Sons and Lovers (was my watershed fiction book but might hate it now)
The Woman In Black (Susan Hill) scariest book ever - totally scared me out of my wits

Merlot · 23/01/2005 21:23

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver was one our book club favourites

cupcakes · 23/01/2005 21:24
