MIL has asked for a French dictionary for her birthday - not a French/English one, but one where the words and the definitions are in French, iyswim - the French equivalent of the Oxford English Dictionary. I'd be grateful for recommendations of what's the best one (and whether I can buy it on Amazon)? I don't really want anything too tiny - looking for a sizeable one, possibly hardback.

I have had a look on Amazon, but not sure I'm in the right bit - they all seem to be French/English and English/French. Maybe I need to go to the French Amazon site, but I'm not sure my French is up to it.

Le Petit Robert is the definitive one!

Fab - thank you . Will look for it.

The largest Collins French / English dictionary has phrases for when you want to use the word "fuck"

including "there's no fucking booze in the house!"

which I think is probably essential

Sounds very useful, GustWriter.

I'm a bit at the price of the Petit Robert - well over £50, and still £44-ish if I buy it from Amazon France. The only other one I can find is the illustrated Petit Larousse, which seems to be aimed at children, but is more in the price range I'd hoped for - I love my MIL, but not sure I'm ready to spend £50 on her. Maybe I have to bite the bullet and just do it. Unless anyone has any other recommendations that will come in under £30?

Le Petit Robert is righ in front of me on shelf. Can tell you it's not petit either!

I'd blimmin' well hope it's a good size too, for that price. So any ideas for other similar dictionaries?

Only know Le Petit Robert tbh
They do a college version for 11-15 year olds - may be a bit too young?

JackieNo · 03/06/2008 22:19

Might be too young. Does the Academie Francaise have some sort of monopoly on dictionaries of French, do you think?
