I have a 10 year old DC with complex learning disabilities who can now read :D :D :D very proud Mum!

Anyway I’m wanting to get him some first very basic chapter books for Christmas that we can read together. At the minute we are still on things like Elmer, Julia Donaldsons, the Hungry caterpillar etc so I’m wanting recommendations for first chapter books that are easy to read and engaging. He’s a big fan of slapstick and toilet humour 😂.

Was looking at a treehouse series by Andy Griffiths but not sure if they fit the bill? Thank you

Ah how lovely! Well done to your son! We love the 13 Storey Tree House books in this house. We also love:
Bunny Vs Monkey
The Looshkin
Agent Harrier
The InvestiGators
Captain Underpants
Dog Man

Hope you find something he loves!

Well done him, what a fantastic achievement! We were recommended the Rabbit & Bear series which DS quite liked. We were also given some simplified Famous Five books for DS birthday which are quite fun too.

Claude books might work.

They are full of pictures to support understanding but have definite chapters and are chunkier than standard picture books.

well done to your DS.

Its difficult, but finding the right book for him can be amazing. My son loved the 13- storey treehouse books. It got him from being a reluctant reader to me finding him quietly reading to himself voluntarily. Without them, I think we’d still be dealing with the pain of forcing him to read a paragraph of his school reading book.

for books to read to him, DS loved Tom Fletcher - especially the space band.

The dinosaur cove books are good. Ds1 moved on to them from the sorts of books you have mentioned and we would read a page each. Also, I would always recommend the beano as a good way to get kids reading. It has layers of humour for different comprehension levels.

Yes Rabbit & Bear, Claude and there’s a series with a pug dog. One of them is definitely called Captain Pug.

Thank you so much everyone, there was a time when we didn’t know if he would ever walk or talk so for him to be reading is just a dream come true.

Thank you for the ideas, I’ve not heard of most of these, off to have a look. He will be so excited to have some big boy books :)

Horrid Henry?
Not chapters, but short stories.

Michael Rosen has some funny, easy to read books.

Definitely 13 storey treehouse!

Zac Power is a huge series of spy kid books, and has different levels that kids can advance through. Test Drive is the first level, I think, and the stories would be interesting enough for a 10 year old.
