How to follow the Cazalet Chronicles?

SevenKingsMustDie · 19/09/2025 20:29

Just that really - I am 3/4 of the way through All Change, and already feel bereft. I have loved this family and I cannot believe I won’t know anything more about them…😢

Any suggestions of how to fill the void?

Just to let you know that Elizabeth Jane Howard’s niece, Louisa Young, is writing further Cazalet books. The first one is due out next year. I adore The Cazalet Chronicles so on the one hand I’m delighted there will be more, but on the other hand I don’t want the series ruined if they’re no good.

EJH did that himself with the last book. And, arguably, the second to last. ☹️

Have you read any Ken Follett? His Century trilogy is amazing. Set in the 20th century. The Kingsbridge books are fantastic too.

softstone · 25/09/2025 14:22

I absolutely love the Cazalets and can't understand why there hasn't been an updated drama series. The last time I investigated why not it appeared that someone (can't remember who) holds the film rights but clearly they're not actually doing anything with them.

I think they should sell them on to someone who will or get on with it themselves!

Great thread op.

I bought the Cazalet Chronicles tv series on a DVD the other month. Keep forgetting to watch it. Also don’t have an easily accessible cd player.

You can buy cheapish DVD players from Argos, even one which suits a HD TV. Unless you meant difficult to access plug sockets/TV which is totally different.

Another poster recommended the Poldark novels, I heartily agree. They are excellent. I was miffed when I realised that the last one or maybe two were more about the children who had now grown up but I needn't have worried because they were every bit as good despite slightly less Ross, Demelza and George. The kids- especially Valentine were great characters too!

The period setting is actually a fascinating one and really added something.

ReluctantCustomer · 25/09/2025 14:32

You might like Penny Vincenzi’s trilogy The Spoils of Time. Similar premise to the Cazalet books, similar family, but a bigger cast.

I saw this on TV it was fabulous. Bought the books on the back of it but haven't been able to get into the first one. I presume it gets better and I just need to persevere?
Loved the Founding by Cynthia Harrod Eagles.
I'm a Poldark fan so will try that next.

Susan Howatch older books penmarric/ cashelmara?
Margaret Forster novels?

CurlewKate · 25/09/2025 15:32

I read somewhere that the author’s daughter is writing another Cazalet novel. Not sure how I feel about that-but……

CurlewKate · 25/09/2025 15:34

EJH’s life was astonishing. The people she had affairs with-almost unbelievable.

Have you tried Marian Keyes? Or Maeve Binchey?

It’s her niece, I posted an article about it upthread

I have read some of Louisa Young’s novels and really recommend 2 of them, set in WW1 and afterwards. But writing sequels to the Cazalet novels…I think that will be very hard to do well.

Falling, by EJH, was brilliant IMO. I think it may have been based on something that really happened in her later life. Don’t read the blurb on Amazon if you don’t like spoilers…

WiseSeal · 05/10/2025 22:41

Marcia Willett’s Chadwick family chronicles is similar. Definitely worth a look.

cheapskatemum · 05/10/2025 23:46

I’m just about to start the second Cazalet novel, after reading the first one years ago and loving it! It reminded me of Mary Wesley’s The Camomile Lawn, so you might enjoy that, although it’s not one of a series.

Buttalapasta · 06/10/2025 16:54

Following as I have just finished the fourth book and was wondering what else to read when I have finished the fifth! I can’t believe I avoided them for years as I thought I wouldn’t enjoy them.

SevenKingsMustDie · 07/10/2025 21:18

So I have just finished The Founding by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles, the first in the Morland Dynasty, which was pretty good. It looks like the series follows the family all the way into the 20th century, which is good going as The Founding was set in the 1400s!

I’ve also got EJH’s memoir, Slipstream, ready to go next…

I’m so glad for all the replies on this thread - they will keep me reading for a good long while!

I can also recommend Elizabeth Jane Howard: a dangerous innocence by Artemis Cooper

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 15/10/2025 21:59

Id completely forgotten about the Cazalet books - I read them years ago and loved them. I've still got the first four somewhere - I know there was a fifth one but don't think I ever read them. I'm going to search our bookcases until I find them.and then start rereading.

ElizabethVonArnim · 15/10/2025 22:22

If you want a family saga across two world wars and you’re not too snooty (which I was, until I found this on the shelf in a holiday hotel) Penny Vincenzi’s series starting with No Angel is really good fun. I may be remembering it with rose-tinted nostalgia, but I remember clearly having conversations with friends about it being so much better than I had expected, and I liked it a lot.

RosieMilkJug · 16/10/2025 12:08

I once met Penny Vincenzi at a publishing party and she was hilarious. Her books are very easy to read - thoroughly recommend them.

ElizabethVonArnim · 16/10/2025 13:53

I can imagine her being brilliant company - lucky you!

If anyone is still following this thread and has read The Morland Dynasty books, I am on The Oak Apple, and have a question!

The character Mary Esther is a key part of the story, and appears on the family tree. Mary Eleanor appears every so often, but is not on the family tree. I am struggling to place her and see where she fits into the family…

Anyone have any idea?!

She is the daughter of Nehemiah, known as Nell.

SevenKingsMustDie · 23/11/2025 18:20

Amazing, @Ilovemyshed - so married to Ambrose, son of Edmund and Alice? 😊 Thank you so much as this was driving me nuts!!
