Several copies of of Noel Streatfeild books. The paperbacks that I had then some hardbacks that are the originals and not abridged.

I remember discovering how heavily cut Painted Garden was and tracking down a hardback - I was so excited! I have several duplicate NS books.

I was as well. Curtain up is another one that has been cut. Likewise swish of the curtain by Pamela Brown was cut for the paperback.

Many.

Some I had to replace because the original fell apart.
Some I got rid of then bought again years later because I wanted to re-read.
Some I had then was given another, or acquired another when a relative died.
Some I had a paperback and later acquired a hardback.

Nonfiction especially, I've bought nice illustrated hardback editions when they've come out, even if I already have the paperback. Some I have three copies of - the paperback, a cheap or secondhand hardback and the illustrated edition.

I didn't know either of those were cut! I love Curtain Up, and will look out for HBs of both. I've just reread Golden Pavements so have been in a theatrical reading mood.

All the Pamela Brown books were reprinted possibly within the last 15 odd years I got the complete set for a birthday present for a theatre loving friend who enjoys children’s book as well for her 60 th birthday they were £20.

I used to have two copies of ‘A Confederacy of Dunces’ by John Kennedy Toole. One copy was for myself, the second was to lend to friends. I would would tell them it will be the funniest book they’d ever read, and a gratifying number of them found that they agreed. Admittedly, one or two of them weren’t keen but it seems to be one of those love it or hate it books. Somebody must have liked it so much that they kept it, as I’m down to one copy now.

Pride and Prejudice
Watership Down
The Handmaid’s Tale
The Eye of the World
The Snow Spider Trilogy

There are plenty that I've owned multiple copies of one after the other because one fell apart or got lost or never returned from the person I lent it to.
I think the only books there are actually two copies of in the house are Wuthering Heights (old version and fancy version), The Secret History (bought a separate copy for DS), Tom Sawyer (me and DH both had a childhood copy) and possibly The Dark is Rising (one copy on its own and one book with all five books in the series under one cover, if that counts.)

Hatters Castle - abridged and unabridged
Jane Eyre - as above
Life after Birth - I buy a copy for anyone I like having a baby. Proof in black and white that you’re not losing your marbles.
The Alchemist and The English Patient, also as talking books.
Jilly Cooper - Imogen, Octavia, Bella etc - I first read these at 14, I remember asking my Grandma what necrophilia was 🤔 I gave them away then found them again in a charity shop and repeat….they take an hour to read each, silly nonsense but sometimes it’s what you need…..

101 Dalmatians. I read the first one so often it practically fell to bits, so had to get another.

A random novel that DH bought me for Christmas two years running (no idea how he managed that, and I can't even remember what it was). I never let on, and I didn't like it all that much the first time. Both are long gone to the charity shop.

A book about bonsai - the second of which I found at a car boot sale, and is signed by the author.

Tiddlywinkly · 23/09/2025 21:23

Pride and Prejudice - tbh I loved the 1995 BBC series and then read the book with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle on the cover. I lost it, so I got a lovely hardback edition with a 'sampler' style cover for Christmas.

The Handmaid's Tale - studied it at school and loved it. Bought myself a signed, first true edition a few years ago.

Wintering - it got me through a breakdown during the Pandemic. I loved it so much I asked for a signed special edition hardback for my birthday.

The Harry Potter books - I have the ones I bought when they each came out, a matching set in a box, and illustrated, pop up special editions of the first three books.
