Mine was but he lost weight. So annoying!

Now I'm stuck what to listen to. I can't wait another few years before another audiobook.

Based on a recommendation on this thread, I've been working my way through the Slough House series on Audible. Currently on the last one and will be utterly bereft when I finish in the next day or two.

The Strike and Ellacot files podcast going through the book will be out in a day or two as well so that will help pass the time.

Civilservant · 05/11/2025 21:22

I’ve been listening to Phillip Pullman’s Rose Field, Martin Sheen’s narration is good but to me (rubbish ear for accents) his voice/accent for the main male character sounds like Cormoran Strike, which I’m finding disconcerting!

Sheen female characters’ voices are worse than Glennister’s IMO, I like Glennister’s Robin voice.

@Civilservant ive gone back to the beginning and currently listening to northern lights x

Crategate · 05/11/2025 21:58

Rose fields is on my list.
I might get the full cast Harry potter new audiobooks first.
I didn't realise there was a Podcast though!

A new episode every 2 weeks and they discuss 3 or so chapters every week & work their way through the whole book. Spoilers throughout re the book being dicussed and all of the books to date.

They are very clever insightful women who know these books backwards. Its a great listen.

Yes, I’ve just finished listening & now impatient for the next one!

Crategate · 07/11/2025 14:53

Nope. I've listened to one podcast and now know why I stopped trying to listen to podcasts. It's like sitting at a pub table with two people who won't let each other get a word in edgeways while you stare into your empty bag of crisps hoping you can go home soon.

😂 - I listen to a lot of podcasts, but I couldn’t tolerate this one. It’s so annoying, and this is a good description of it! I gave it a good go, but no.

Civilservant · 08/11/2025 12:02

Yes, good description @Crategate I like some podcasts in that style, but the irritating aspects were too much for me with this one!

I've just read this (long waiting list at the library!) I didn't suss the murderer but I did have a suspect (for at least part of it) that nobody else has mentioned at all: the woman at the shop who claimed to have very poor eyesight. I thought she was at least an accomplice to whatever had happened and was being careful to establish herself as being physically incapable of such a thing, making it more plausible by deliberately blundering into/dropping something before she mentioned it. I realise now that it was completely irrelevant but it felt like planting a clue at the time. (But thinking about it some more, wasn't there a minor female character in COE who had an injured ankle for what turned out to be no particular reason at all in terms of the plot? I remember thinking that would be significant and it wasn't - that book was just full of leg and foot imagery!)

I also thought for a while that one of Plug's dogs was going to inadvertently save one of the team from an attacker!

From a more general writing point of view - all the will they/won't they is getting a bit tiresome now, but I can sort of see why she's doing it - it wouldn't be the same series if they were just happily in a relationship. Can anyone imagine a book in which they're an item and they just solve a mystery as an item, with no emotional turmoil? I also felt there was a bit too much telling not showing!

I would very much like to see a book in which they negotiate the boundaries of being a couple and working together. I imagine it would still involve turmoil. And be an interesting challenge for a writer of JKR's skill.

Karistyleaftea · 30/12/2025 21:39

I wouldn't mind book 9 being released in 2 parts - desperate to see how it goes with Robin and Strike!

Devenishgirl · 31/12/2025 00:13

Also interesting that it’s Robin’s presence on the stairs which prevents Strike from going down after Charlotte.

Violetparis · 01/01/2026 19:36

I enjoyed the Strike/Robin relationship in this book but found the crime case really confusing and convoluted. Pages of theories that never amount to anything and other cases that are irrelevant to the plot. I was disappointed, hope the next one is better.

DetectiveStrayke · 12/01/2026 22:14

I've finally gotten my hands on THM, read it, and read this thread! I hope some of you are still on here as I have the need to discuss!

I really enjoyed the mystery in this one. Although as per some others, I keep getting confused about the details of the conclusion. For the first time ever, I started making notes as I went along, as usually I rush it, and wanted to relish this book and have a go at figuring out what happened (I didn't). I would say this did increase my enjoyment at how convoluted it was.

The idea of having to find out who the dead person was seemed a nice change, with the rather odd list of candidates.

All the way through I thought I'd noticed something S&R had missed - there was a shop assistant, Laura, in Ramsay's Silver when they first visit (sullen, slouches off for lunch). I was convinced she'd had access to the computer, sent the emails to Oz, arranged William Wright's interview, etc. Was frankly quite insulted she was immediately forgotten and never mentioned again (unless she's the assistant that quits when Todd's murder is discovered as is scared of getting murdered). She's never questioned or anything.

I also thought perhaps Rita Linda was Rena Liddell. There were several 'RL's as per Niall's letter - Ralph Lawrence, Rena Liddell, but that wasn't really focussed on.

The whole thing struck me as quite 'Jonathan Creek', and although the killer getting in unseen was reminiscent of a JC episode (and I'd wondered if this is what had happened) my theory was that William Wright, with his 'Guess Who' appearance was actually two people - so that the WW who worked in the shop and the WW in the flat/elsewhere were separate people trying to look the same. Not sure why, ha.

Things I'm still unsure of:
1 - as mentioned by pp, and by Robin and Strike, why go to all that effort when they could have just given him a peanut?
2 - the only reason Tyler Powell's name ever even came up as a possible candidate was Dilys overhearing him say something about silver. Was this him actually talking about the silver shop? It's extremely weak.
3 - as others have asked, what was the plan re the actual silver? Everyone talking about their 'big payment' expected, so were they going to get it out and sell it at some point?

I'm also slightly confused about who Banfoot thinks did the job for him, and Shanker's contact.

I'm one of the minority who, at the start of the series, did not love the focus on the will-they-won't-they - I thought it would be more refreshing to have a deep friendship and professional relationship without having to fancy each other. But now that's been established I want them to just get on with it!

There were a few bits that made me laugh in this book - but Strike's indignance at only getting 3 calimari rings when he's been at that hotel for ages cracked me up (I found it relatable tbh).

FiveBarGate · 12/01/2026 22:50

I'm half way through it again and enjoying the case much more this time. I liked it first time but was focused on all the other elements and like you had questions.

I can answer number one. Griff didn't know about the allergy. He says 'i didn't know that' when his grandmother explains why he couldn't join the army and they observe that she is pleased to know something he doesn't.

I'll come back to you on 2/3 when I've finished the rest!

I love that because of the level of detail they are enjoyable more than once.

FiveBarGate · 12/01/2026 22:54

For 2 I'd suppose he was a missing person of the right height and build that couldn't be ruled out by DNA because he was adopted. Can't be that many people who would fit that profile.

RobinEllacotStrike · 13/01/2026 10:23

1 - as mentioned by pp, and by Robin and Strike, why go to all that effort when they could have just given him a peanut?

Like @FiveBarGate this was a great find on the reread. Griff goes "I didn't know that" and you could almost feel the "FFS - all this and I could have simply slipped him a peanut" hanging in the air.

2 - the only reason Tyler Powell's name ever even came up as a possible candidate was Dilys overhearing him say something about silver. Was this him actually talking about the silver shop? It's extremely weak.

Tyler was reported as a missing person and had all the physical characteristics of the body so the police thought him a potential victim. I think Dilys talking about Tyler saying "silver" on the phone came out when she was interviewed by S&R.

3 - as others have asked, what was the plan re the actual silver? Everyone talking about their 'big payment' expected, so were they going to get it out and sell it at some point?

The missing silver was smoke & mirrors just to disguise the murder. It was a clever plot given the very distant connection between Griff/Tyler & the silver shop. IDR them talking about a big payment expected - I'll listen out (I'm on a reread).

DetectiveStrayke · 13/01/2026 13:15

Thanks all! I can't remember exactly who was expecting a payout other than the delivery man McGee, possibly Todd but perhaps I made that up!

Who would have reported Tyler missing - Dilys? Need to reread that bit...

Regardless of peanut allergy, I would have thought there were easier ways of getting rid of Tyler, but that would be a far more boring book, I suppose!

RobinEllacotStrike · 14/01/2026 10:35

I enjoy all the Strike books much more on ther rereads (first read is always at lightning speed) - all the little details and foreshadowing are there & its very enjoyable to see how cleverly its all put together.

Griffs "Oh I didn't know that" re the peanut is up there with Vikas typing (paraphrase) "I'll be right back there's someone at the door" just as he lets his murder in (in Ink Black Heart).

BertieBotts · 14/01/2026 23:06

YY, they are very like Harry Potter in that way. I read all the original books dozens of times (the first one possibly over 100) with the exception of the last one, which sadly I have only read about 3x!

I would always, literally every single time discover something new or make some new connection. I remember reading Philosopher's Stone about 12 years after it was released and noticing for the first time that Tom, the barman at the Leaky Cauldron, is described as looking "like a gummy walnut" and found this so funny as well as marvelling that I'd never noticed it before.

I think her writing is so compelling that I just drink them in like someone dying of thirst and skip details, so there are always new things to discover. It took me longer to get that re-readability with the Strike series but I am there now and it's very enjoyable, even though it does prevent me from reading anything else!

Cattywillow · 14/01/2026 23:20

Yes, agree that Griff didn’t know about the peanut allergy. Ironic in hindsight. The payout is a good question. Todd approached Griff saying he could help him with a problem (Wright). I don’t recall how Todd knew/found Griff. Todd’s idea was to steal the silver and kill off Wright (Tyler) at the same time. So Griff had to offer him a cut. When he didn’t pay up, Todd would have started agitating. That and his upskirting etc would were why he had to die. Or possibly they took the smaller bits of silver and only left the big pieces?

soul sisters in Strellacot obsession. 💜

I havent read any HP in years & I am about to embark on a reread of the series. Need something to keep me occupied until Strike 9.

I so agree that the language, writing style, skillful plotting and far reaching foreshadowing etc make her boosk so rereadable - total modern literary classics.

"I don’t recall how Todd knew/found Griff"
They were both involved in the European sex traffiking ring and kept in contact - Griff via his band travels & Todd as a truck driver (and also Wade in the Green Jacket who was attacking Robin). Todd knew too much about Oz's identity so was killed with his Mum once Strike & Robin started getting closer.
They were probably both raping Jolanda/Chloe for years and possibly both were invovled in the murder of Reata Lindvall.
