Book with strong female character

I'm so sick of reading/listening to books in which the main character is a woman without any boundaries.

Currently listening to The Woman at No.3, who is unable to tell her neighbour that she's too busy/tired to invite her in and she can't even assert herself with her 2 year old daughter.

She needs to get reading MN!

Before that I read a book about a woman who was bullied by her in laws and couldn't just silently fumed.

It's so infuriating. I want to read books with women who don't take any shit. Or who realise early on what's happening and nip it in the bud.

I admit, I don't spend much time choosing books, whether at the library or getting the freebies on audible.

So, anyone got any suggestions? Thanks, you might just save my sanity!

You might enjoy Fundamentally by Nussaibah Younis? Very funny and the women are real people so good and bad.

The Outlander series

Taylor Jenkins Reid writes some great female characters.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 14/08/2025 13:12

Sara Paretsky or Sue Grafton if you like American detective fiction.

Dolamroth · 14/08/2025 13:12

Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor

Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin

Lissa Evans - Old Baggage trilogy. All of her books for adults, in fact.
Catriona Ward - can be pretty grim thrillers but no one could accuse her female characters of being wimpy pushovers.

The four Boudicca books by Manda Scott - lots of strong female characters (and some male ones too!) if you like historical novels.

BerfyTigot · 15/08/2025 10:23

I loved the Boudicca novels, and have pretty much everything Manda Scott had written! Thanks for the reminder to reread @FizzingAda

@AlmanbyRoadtrip I'm quite partial to a grim thriller in the right mood 😁 Also loved Lissa Evans.

Started the Outlander series last night 🥰

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations - plenty to keep me going.

Blood & Beauty by Sarah Dunant about Lucretia Borgia.

The Alice Network by Katie Quinn.

The Ex Wives by Deborah Moggach.

A Sea Change by Veronica Henry.

The Harbinder Kaur books by Elly Griffiths (I like Harbinder more than Ruth Galloway)

The new Lissa Evans paperback came out this week, you could get that.

The Ithaca trilogy by Claire North is great, and packed to the gunnels with amazing female characters.

Came here to say "Gone with the Wind". There has never been a more badass character in literature than Scarlett O'Hara. 💪🏻

I see your Scarlett O'Hara and raise you Becky Sharp 💪💪. Vanity Fair is a good one!

If you like slightly bleak post-apocalypse/mild sci-fi, definitely go for Wool. Great book!

Selfishshellfishies · 15/08/2025 18:30

The Power by Naomi Alderman

FloraBotticelli · 15/08/2025 18:33

I LOVE Gone With the Wind but wouldn’t describe Scarlett as badass tbh - she’s very avoidant (‘I’ll think about it tomorrow’) and immature! But it’s a very good read anyway.

I always recommend South Riding by Winifred Holtby. Lots of strong female characters. Wonderful book. Probably the one I'd take to a desert island.

Boomboomboomboom · 15/08/2025 18:37

The Chronicals of St Mary's - historical time travel has a kick ass female protagonist

considertheravens · 15/08/2025 18:49

The Witches series by Terry Pratchett. Granny Weatherwax is the GOAT. Also the Tiffany's.

The Confederation series by Tanya Huff, about Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr. Torin is completely kick ass and I want to be her when I grow up.
