IMO, anyway. And so good, I wanted to know if others had read them
The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout. I've had this on my kindle for ever, and not read it. But then I jumped in. What a great read and how perceptive ES is. I've read all her others, and liked them, but this is another level.
The Towers of Trebizond by Rose Macauley. A book I read as a teenager, and just reread. A very strange book, but with wonderful insights into relationships and religion. As an Anglican, I find it of especial interest, and I'd like to know what others think of it.

Oohhh, thank you for the recommendation, OP! I've been meaning to read something by Elizabeth Strout, but didn't find one that appealed strongly. The Burgess Boys looks very interesting and a good one to start with (although I've also just bought Olive Kitteridge on Kindle, since it's only 99p!).

Thanks to a poster on the "favourite book" thread, I'm currently reading J.C.Sherriff's The Fortnight in September and really loving that. Only three chapters in, but already find myself reflecting on what we've gained and what we've lost with progress over the past century.

I've put TFIS on my kindle and will give it a go, thanks

As i have an interest in the English Civil War, someone once recommended Rose Macaulay's They Were Defeated. It defeated me completely I'm afraid, and I gave up quite early on.

Im on a phase of reading and rereading older books though, so I might give it another try. Had a look at the write up of Towers of Trebizond on good reads and it's been added to my list. Years ago I worked in my parents' bookshop, and I remember it was always a pretty steady seller.

I'm a bit useless posting to say that I did read 'The Towers of Trebizond' when I was young and I don't remember much about it but I think someone gets up on to a camel on the first page and I think it's from the book that I have an impression that Kemal Attaturk said women weren't to wear the veil any more. I'm sure I enjoyed and I read another Rose McCauley afterwards.

Tot is very worth rereading.
One of the plot lines is Aunt Dot liberating Turkish women (or not) but there's much more than that.
