Looking for a new series: fantasy/saga/scifi

I am looking for a new long-running series I can listen to as audiobooks-any recommendations? I would like something world building with decent writing. I love science fiction and fantasy (to a lesser extent) but also happy with just a solid series. A bit of escapism would be ideal. Just finished Harry Potter (again!) - any ideas?

Elizabeth Bear writes some hard sci-fi through to fantasy.

New Amsterdam series: alternative universe where New York remained New Amsterdam, and the police are sorcerers with vampire support. Spans late 19th century to mid 20th.

The Edda of Burdens series: Norse mythology reimagined with some Dr Moreau, wolf who eats the world and reincarnation thrown in

The Iskryne series: more Norse-ish, with added Grendel, emotional/psychically linked wolves and warriors

Jacob’s Ladder series: generation starships and evolution and Wars of the Roses

Jenny Casey series: cyborg cops in near future Canada-ish

Eternal Sky series: strong themes from the Mongol Empire and Game of Thrones Dothraki, with some added sorcery and plenty of intrigue

The Lotus Kingdoms: Eternal Sky series adjacent, in the same world but later on, a bit further south and east flavoured

She writes more: the Promethean Age is one series which is full fantasy [Christopher Marlowe myth of being an Elizabethan spy with the twist of him being an agent for Queen of the Faeries at the same time, along with Shakespeare and his crew] and I have to be concentrating pretty hard to keep up with the prose

The mistborn saga by Brandon Sanderson.

I enjoyed The Kingkiller Series by Patrick Rothfuss.

I liked Maria V Snyder's Poison Study series (6 books but 9 if you also read the glass series). I'm not sure if they'd be on audiobook though 😊

Robin Hobb - farseer trilogy (and the epic rest of it)

SaturdayGiraffe · 11/08/2025 14:30

Haven't read them myself but a few people I know keep going on about The Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros. It's 3 large books.

There's also Temeraire by Naomi Novik (7 books).

Although, if you're listening, I don't know what the audio is like

Have a look at the series around Penric & Desdemona by Lois McMaster Bujold which are fantasty and I think rather wonderful. Think there are about 8 in the series along with a couple of novellas. She's also written a large series of books, about 16+, called the Vorkosigan saga.

Have you tried the Stranger Times series by C K McDonnell?

There are four so far - Stranger Times, This Charming Man, Love Will Tear Us Apart and Relight My Fire. The fifth one is due out in October I think. I have enjoyed them and they are quite amusing.

I was going to suggest these. There are about fifteen all told. I imagine they’ve probably got a good reader (I read them on the page).

Purplebunnie · 12/08/2025 22:34

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever - Stephen Donaldson

TenderChicken · 12/08/2025 22:39

3rding Robin Hobb. There are 16 books that take place in the "Realm of the Elderlings", and they're not short - the one I'm currently reading is 900 pages. Would definitely keep you busy listening for a good while.

Most stuff by
NK Jemisin
Robin Hobb
Brandon Sanderson

Cerialkiller · 12/08/2025 22:43

Naomi Novak. You're welcome.

Many standalones which are all fantastic. My first was Uprooted which was just stunning.

The scholarmance trilogy is just...incredible. Best thing I've read for years.

The Race Is On series by O.C Heaton.

I was going to suggest these! There are 14, including novellas, and they're really enjoyable.

Wholly agree! Start with Assassin's Apprentice and you'll be hooked for many many wonderful novels. It's fantasy rather than sci-fi, and very well written.

sakura06 · 12/08/2025 23:17

NK Jemisin is brilliant! I love the Broken Earth trilogy and The City We Became. Leigh Bardugo’s Ninth House and Hell Bent are superb (read each one over a weekend this past winter). Patrick Rothfuss’s Kingkiller books are amongst my favourites ever, but I remain nervous he will never complete the trilogy.

FourIsNewSix · 12/08/2025 23:18

Do you have any preference about the main characters or setting?

I'll recommend Mercy Thompson series. Mercy is a car mechanic in her thirties, the story is set in the US so it is partially about supernatural folks of all kinds coming out and subsequent racial questions with good historical parallels
I like the story and appreciate a good number of relevant female characters, adult approach to relationships (like they know themselves, not overly spicy scenes), and it is generally fun to listen to.

Latenightreader · 12/08/2025 23:40

Do you know the TV series The Expanse? I've only seen a few episodes but I recently listened to the first book and thought it was terrific.

SixImpossibleThings · 13/08/2025 19:25

Dark Eden trilogy by Chris Beckett

The Three Body Problem trilogy by Liu Cixin

Dune series by Frank Herbert

Dolamroth · 24/08/2025 19:05

The Cantos by Dan Simmons are great. The first one is Hyperion. It's sort of based on the Canterbury Tales.

Xyloplane · 06/09/2025 23:55

Thanks all for your recommendations, I’ve decided to start with Uprooted by Naomi Novik as recommended by @Cerialkiller

The Chronicles of St Mary’s by Jodi Taylor, about time travellers. Fantastic.
