Read a few of his earlier Cross books, looking for something to read rather than Lee Child, I’ve probably Reachered out, Patterson seems to write so many, often with other authors, can anyone recommend any, or those to avoid,

It's probably hard to say, because he doesn't write them himself! He is sort of "creative director" of a team of "co-authors" and just directs the plot from afar while raking in the cash 🤣

Did wonder how he could write so many even if he did collaborate, so basically, he decides the plot and the coauthor does the actual book which he then says yes or no to. Makes it difficult to know how good any particular series is, unless it’s one written solely by him

He wrote a book about Epstein, didn’t he?!

Well if he did, I won’t be reading it

@Sadcafe Oh, me neither!

I was interested in reading some James Patterson… but couldn’t find any. Literally everything I’ve picked up with his name plastered across it has the actual author’s name in small print somewhere else on the cover. I’ve no idea how he gets away with it.

Try Robert Crais or Harlen Coben. I find James Patterson really annoying now, with his paragraph-length chapters. I stopped reading him when I read a chapter that ended halfway through a sentence! I know it’s his ‘thing’ but it was a step too far.

on an aside I’ve just finished reading’The Housemaid’ by Frieda someone and it was totally superb.

Agree Patterson has just gone for volume now.
Try Bosch by Michael Connelly
or Renko series by Martin Cruz Smith

Crime book wise I like

both Jonathan and Faye Kellermans books, not so keen on the Jesse Kellerman ones.
MJ Arlidge
Mark Billingham (the older ones)
Used to love the Sue Grafton alphabet books
Simon Kernick
PJ Tracey

Try the Eddie Flynn books by Steve Cavanagh. There's a whole series with the most recent one coming out this week.

WanderingGiraffe · 31/07/2025 23:25

I’ve read a few of his ‘Private’ series and enjoyed them. Casual, stand-alone books.

I really like Deon Meyer books if you like crime/thriller novels - can start with either Devils Peak (probably my favourite) or Dead At Daybreak…

I read the book he “wrote” with bill clinton, the president is missing I think . Was quite good.

started reading Eruption with Michael Crichton and it was rubbish. Which is odd because both good authors in the past.

Thanks for all the suggestions, might do something I haven’t done for a long time and use Ryne library then can try new authors without the cost
