One more Dr Ruth Galloway book to go ☹️

I started reading them in January after someone recommended them on here and I've been hooked. I'm currently on holiday in Italy and have just finished the penultimate one. I now have The Last Remains to go.

I know some of the storylines can be a bit far fetched but I've just loved reading them and seeing the characters develop.

Im going to be truly bereft when I've finished it.

If anyone has any recommendations of something similar, a series of books, I'd be happy to investigate.

J D Kirk’s DCI Logan series. There is a motley crew of detectives and interesting plots and, occasionally, the books are funny too. Also, T G Reid’s DCI Bone series. I also love Daniel Silva’s series about an art restorer who is actually an agent for Mossad.

I’ve been you! So sad to reach the end.
I went on to read the Brighton series and the other contemporary series EG has written. Not as good, but good enough.
Jane Casey’s Maeve Kerrigan series is close.
Have you tried. Anthony Horowitz’s Hawthorn series?
kate Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie series.

I only have time to listen on audiobook a d room full of bones isn't on audiobook! I have bought a paper copy to read but I have not had time to read it in over a year. I tried to bring it on a work trip recently but then a colleague happened to have the seat next to me booked so I didn't get to read it again!

AnOldCynic · 27/07/2025 22:56

@Stripeysockspots it is, I can get it on my Borrowbox account with my library.

BG2015 · 28/07/2025 05:48

I can't get any of them on my Borrowbox, I've tried. I wonder if it's regional

Our local library is so bad for audiobooks. It hardly has any on the libby app which other people seem to find amazing. So it's definitely regional. I tend to use audible but it's not on there.

Kate Ellis - Wesley Peterson books are also police / archaeology based.

EG has also written a 4 book series featuring DI Harbinder Kaur. I really enjoyed these, having turned to them once I’d binged on the Ruth series.

I enjoyed the Harbinder Kaur series, but not the 1950s series, and I wasn't keen on the Frozen People which I've just finished.

I found the LJ Ross books similar, Sycamore Gap, etc.

Jonathan kellerman has a very long series of books called the Alex Delaware series, they are about an American child psychologist who helps solve crimes. I've been enjoying them.

I can't get them on borrow box. It depends what your local library pays for which isn't much here.
I didn't like her Brighton series but the Harbinder Kaur one was okay.
Just finished The Frozen People which is the first in a new series and loved it. The main character is a bit Ruth Galloway but there is time travel involved.

Stripeysockspots · 02/08/2025 17:12

I went on a work trip and managed to read 7 chapters of the book! But now I'm back with dc so will be another year before the book gets finished. But progress nonetheless!

I was going to say that also. I also like the Harbinder Kaur ones. Not quite the same style as Ruth, but I enjoy the character developments in Mary Hannah's books (also crime series), Angela Marsons - and for something a bit "off the track" try all the Hillerman's (Tony then Anne) books about Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito (but make sure you read them in order!)

They are! Their son writes detective stories too. I haven't read them yet but they sound good as well. Very talented family!

If you don't mind books set in the 1920s and 30s I've enjoyed a series by Catriona McPherson set in Scotland. The main character is aristocrat called Dandy Gilver There are currently 16 in the series. The first one is After the Armistice Ball.
I also like the Kate Shackleton books by Frances Brody set in the same period in Yorkshire. The first one of those is Dying in the Wool.

duckduckgooseduckagain · 02/08/2025 17:34

I’ve just been reading the Clare McKay series by Marion Todd, only got one to go. I’ll be waiting for the next one. Detective series set in Scotland. I really like the characters.

cheapskatemum · 02/08/2025 17:51

You might like the Karen Pirie books by Val McDermid, as I do. I’m a bit behind you with the Elly Griffiths-Dr Ruth Galloway books & not looking forward to finishing them either.

claracluck1978 · 02/08/2025 17:52

I loved all of the Ruth Galloway books and I’d love EG to revisit her in the future. I’m sure I’ve said before on here that I’m surprised they have never been adapted for TV.

Revently, I have been reading the Dorset Crime Series by Rachel McLean - she’s also written series based in B’ham and Cumbria I think which I will no doubt move on to later.

But I do so miss Ruth!

NigelPonsonbySmallpiece · 02/08/2025 18:02

Elizabeth George (author) books are also worth checking out. They are making a new version of the tv series from ages ago and it will be on tv in a bit. Loads of books in the series.
