Leaving crime fiction behind……

I’ve read crime fiction for years but I’m starting to find it too hard to read them, think as DD 14 becomes more independent and closer in age to the demographic of many a crime fiction victim!

What would you recommend for a recovering crime fiction reader? It need to have enough of a story to keep me reading.

Other books I’ve enjoyed off the top of my head; The Foundling by GH, The House of Hidden Mother’s, The Power, Lion: A long way home.

You might like Mick Herron’s Slow Horses series, though they can still make you worry about the state of the world. Have you read the Thursday Murder a club? No teen victims there. On a completely different tack, what about Sarah Waters, Fingersmith or Affinity were my favourites, or Laura Purcell’s The Silent Companions (bit creepy but very readable).

You need spy stories. As pp said, Mick Heron is a good start.

My gateway was 'The spy who came in from the cold'.

But I recommend:
Henry Porter
Charles Cummings (not the recent books as audio books though, the narrator is dreadful).
David McCloskey

Ooh @Ilovelowry thanks for the Henry Porter recommendation, he's a new one to me but I enjoyed the others you have suggested.
