Ive read so many “funny”books but I rarely laugh out loud. Im always disappointed when being told books are funny. Books by Woodhouse and Jerome K Jerome dont raise a smile even though I like them.

I think Ive only ever laughed at two books - Love, Nina and Where D’You Go Bernadette . I did laugh at Adam Kays first book but that was because real life is funny not because of his writing.

Anyone else like this?

Occasionally. I laughed out loud at a P.G. Wodehouse book yesterday actually!

Sidebeforeself · 07/07/2025 17:47

God..my typo! Wodehouse obviously!

Loads of books. Adrian Mole comes to mind. The first one

I often laugh when I’m reading even in public. That last book that made me do that was ‘Stalin Ate my Homework’ by Alexi Sayle.

The Satsuma Complex had me laughing in tears which I've never done reading a book before x

IsItWickedNotToCare · 07/07/2025 18:12

Yes sometimes

Overtheatlantic · 07/07/2025 18:13

Only Wodehouse has made me laugh out loud.

Soluckyinlove · 07/07/2025 18:20

The only book that has ever made me laugh out loud was "The Throwback" by Tom Sharpe.

veryhottoday · 07/07/2025 18:23

Bridget Jones's Diary. (the first book)
PG Wodehouse
Kingsley Amis, Lucky Jim

TheBig50 · 07/07/2025 18:24

@JDKirk does make me chuckle out loud. The books, obviously.

I've forgotten the author now, all of his books are an easy read, usually about life's mishaps... That's going to bug me now. But he makes me laugh out loud.
He's so hilarious, I've forgotten his name!

I’m with you OP. Despite having a sense of humour I rarely laugh out loud. I can’t remember when the last time I did reading a book.

watching TV I do occasionally - almost always whilst watching Taskmaster 😂

I want to say Nick Park but he's Wallace and Grommit isn't he?

I'm such a cultured reader 🤣

Some of Bill Bryson’s books have made me laugh out loud, but it’s a long time ago. I don’t know if I have lost my sense of humour or if it’s because I am getting old and am rarely surprised by anything anymore, but I can’t remember the last time I read a really funny book.

Oh yes Adrian Mole; glorious. Also lol at Dawn French books

ElizabethVonArnim · 07/07/2025 19:03

I do. I recently realised I was keeping people on a night flight awake by giggling while rereading Bridget Jones and had to put it away in order not to be a horrendous twat.

EmeraldDreams73 · 07/07/2025 19:05

Absolutely. I once had to put my book away on a packed train to avoid being lynched as I was laughing so hard I couldn't hide it.

Steelworks · 07/07/2025 19:05

I don’t laugh either. Mind you, I rarely laugh at comedy on tv either. That’s not to say I don’t find books comical, I do, but rarely have they made me laugh out loud.

Dominoeffecter · 07/07/2025 19:08

Rarely, Richard Ayoade’s books make me laugh though.

Aparecium · 07/07/2025 19:11

I remember laughing when reading some of Ben Elton's books, though I don't recall which. I commuted by Tube at the time, and quite a few passengers would lean over to look at the cover.

Most recently I was totally convulsed with laughter reading a MN thread about ladybird willies. Absolutely bonkers!

Sminty2 · 07/07/2025 19:11

I laugh when it’s funny, I love a surprise laugh in a book. First book I laughed out loud at was Clive James, Unreliable Memoirs. Bits of it made me cry with laughter and some just made me cry. But it was real, can’t stop myself laughing, very rare in books.

MrsSethGecko · 07/07/2025 19:18

Adrian Mole always makes me laugh, and I've read them every year since I was 10.

24Dogcuddler · 07/07/2025 19:24

How to be Champion Sarah Millican made me laugh out loud and parts of Peter Kay’s books. Agree re Adrian Mole and some of the teen books I read when my girls were reading them Angus Thongs etc Louise Rennison.
I read too many Psychological thrillers now. Not usually a laugh s minute.

GentleSheep · 07/07/2025 19:25

Gerald Durrell's 'My Family and Other Animals' had me in stitches!

RedRec · 07/07/2025 19:40

The first book I read by Bill Bryson (Notes From a Small Island) had me cry-laughing practically from the start. I still remember that glorious feeling of absolute uncontrollable mirth while reading it. His bewilderment at our casual sayings. When he first arrived, I think in Dover, people kept talking about going down to 'the front' and he was wondering what the hell it was the front of. Still tickled me long afterwards.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 07/07/2025 20:15

Sometimes I do, but more so when the book seems quite serious and then some quip cracks me up! I thought this when I was reading Ken Smith's 'The Way of the Hermit' recently.
