If so-what? And did you like it?

Pull of the Stars was so good. In fact I'm planning to reread it. I believe it was published just as covid hit. Terrifying.

The wonder was a rollicking good read as well! I may have to reread room soon

Has anyone read The Wonder? Or Slammerkin?

Ha, I'm rubbish at remember authors of books - yes, I've read Slammerkin too, hadn't connected it with the author of Room though, they're so different!

Slammerkin is really good, I'd recommend.

Loved Frog Music, Slammerkin, Room & Pull of the stars

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/07/2025 18:50

I’ve read Room and The Wonder. The films of both were good as well

TonstantWeader · 08/07/2025 19:08

I've read Room, Frog Music, The Pull of the Stars, The Wonder and Haven. All very different and all very enjoyable. I like fiction that's based on old newspaper stories for some weird reason (see also Kate Summerscale).

Loved The Wonder and The Pull of the Stars.

Me too - especially The Pull of the Stars, I thought it was fantastic

I've read 7 of her books (The Wonder, Stir Fry, Hood, Landing, Room, Slammerkin, Frog Music) and enjoyed them all.

I like her writing, in fact I'm glad you asked the quesiton, it will prompt me to read one or two more of ther books 😀

I read Room years ago. It's an interesting tale and really makes you think how someone survives in that situation, and what you would do if you were her.

I've watched the film of The Wonder, and the book is in my Amazon basket, but I have 100+ on my To Be Read pile, so I'm putting off buying it for now! I'm glad to see that so many other people have enjoyed Emma Donoghue's books, though.

Currently reading Pull of the Stars because of this thread. Loving it, thanks for the recommendation

champagnetrial · 12/07/2025 12:42

I only read Room by her which I quite enjoyed, but it's looking like her latest, The Paris Express, will be a DNF for me. It's really dull so far and has deffo hit the buffers.

cariadlet · 12/07/2025 22:51

I think I've read most of her books. She's one of my favourite authors.

We read Pull of the Stars and Learned by Heart for my book club. They both went down very well and there was so much to talk about.

I wasn't sure about The Haven at first but I persevered and ended up being really gripped by it.

I read The Wonder when I went on holiday with my Mum. We took in turns to read it. We both loved it. I remember having to keep checking what point in the story Mum had got to so we could talk about it without spoilers.

I also enjoyed Slammerkin. I've read Frog Music and The Sealed Letter and I know that I liked them but I can't remember anything about them.

My favourite writers are ones that write well, have fully rounded characters, give you something to think about and also have decent plots. I like a good page turner. For me, Emma Donoghue really fits the bill.

Slammerkin is good but bloody hell, it's bleak. The main character didn't stand a chance.

Room is brilliant, the film adaptation was spot-on too.

minipoodlemum · 12/07/2025 22:57

Oh I hated Slammerkin. I found it very depressing and got irritated by some of the decisions the main character made.

reallyalurker · 12/07/2025 23:26

I've read Stir Fry and Hood. Both were really good. It's years ago but both have stayed in my mind. Stir Fry is lighter and you can tell it was her first book. I haven't read her later books as they all look rather bleak.

NewDogOwner · 12/07/2025 23:52

Was completely absorbed by Room.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 13/07/2025 08:44

I thinks she’s an excellent writer.
I loved Haven, The Wonder, Akin and The Room. The Pull of the Stars was well written but not my favourite.

Yeah Slammerkin is bleak. I think that’s why I like it! It’s realistic and roughly based on a true story. It’s not for the sensitive reader though. There are definite potential triggers in there.

Denimrules · 13/07/2025 19:59

I met her when she studied in Cambridge. A very strong character, reminded me a bit of Germane Greer on some levels

beadystar · 13/07/2025 21:38

All of them I think, and saw her speak. She was fascinating and funny. I think she’s excellent. Slammerkin is a gripping read. The only one I plodded through was Haven. Hood made me cry. I think my overall favourite is Learned by Heart. I like queer history and it was a reading of Anne Lister’s early life.

Mammut · 17/07/2025 12:11

Have now finished The Pull of the Stars and I absolutely hated the ending. It really detracted from the rest of the book.

Arseusmaximus · 17/07/2025 12:51

I read Room when DS was a baby. I remember sobbing through the last few pages as I loved Jack so much and didn't want to say goodbye to him!

SapatSea · 20/07/2025 13:13

Slammerkin is great! The Wonder is good. I've read most of her books and they are always interesting, I also liked Akin and The Pull of the Stars
