I'm not buying physical books for a month but do have kindle unlimited and Aldo willing to spend a few pounds on books
I've been poorly and off work and gave gorged on comfort books like they're cake but now feel a bit sickly
I want a compelling yet easy read
Love Lisa's Jewell, Dorothy Koomdon, Alice Feeney, was reading that Sophie Hannah has some more stuff out - I might just be ready to revisit her after the orphan choir freaked mr out to the degree I couldn't sleep.
Ideally no cancer or familial death please
Kate Atkinson is great but too involved for my weary brain right now
Any ideas greatly received thank you.
I need to read for distraction and escape from pain !

Have a look at the Kindle Monthly Deals - put all three words into your search engine and it'll come up with a huge list of books from KU freebies and 99p books to more expensive titles. The monthly deals include a wide variety of fiction genres as well as non-fiction and there are always big names among them, including those you've mentioned.

Lisa Jewell - The House We Grew Up In

I had an op last year and read SO many Lisa Jewell books, one after the other!

Anything by John Marrs and quite a lot of his books are on kindle unlimited. Jo Spain as a lot of hers are on unlimited or they are 99p

If you are after comfort books then I would give Lisa Jewell, The House We Grew Up In a miss. I haven’t particularly been affected by any of the issues raised in the book but by the end, I was finding it very difficult to finish. The child’s suicide and the circumstances that might have led to it, it was just all too much when I thought I had picked up another thriller

Seven Sisters series - Lucinda Riley - love these books. Her stand alone books are good also.

Rhys Bowen - really rate her books also. ‘In Farleigh Fields’ is one of my favourites.

John Marrs - someone mentioned him above. Good books.

Robert Harris - good historical based dramas. Wrote Conclave.

Steve Higgs books - writes several cozy mystery series which are well written and easy to read, and some have a slight tongue in cheek element.
Albert and Rex - man and retired police dog exploring the country and solving murders
Patricia Fisher - cruise based mysteries
Blue Moon series - solving crimes which appear to be paranormal but aren’t

Jilly Cooper - Riders etc - can’t go wrong there for pure bonking escapism, and also well written. Ditto Jackie Collins.

Oh fair enough point, I thought it was a great read.

I second the Kindke book deals on Kindle.

Bookbub - register with Bookbub ( it’s free) to get regular book suggestions, most for 99p.

Kindke unlimited - should be able to get an opening offer (99p for three months?) then £9(?) a month. Worth it if you read a lot of books. However, if you read 1X99p a week, cheaper not to go in it.

Shari low, Beth Moran, Debbie Johnson, Linda Green, Samantha Tonge, LJ Ross, JD Kirk. They’re all quite nice and easy reads. JD Kirk and LJ Ross are more crime and mystery but aren’t too dark. Hope you feel better soon.

Queen Camilla has an online book club and I like the recommendations on there. It’s called The Queen’s Reading Room.

I’m into Rachael Joyce at the moment but like Ruth Jones’ books too.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 05/07/2025 08:40

I also highly recommend kindle unlimited.

Definitely worth it if you read a lot of crime / thrillers or anything easy going.

Just be careful, there's also a lot of trash out there. Some series have the first book or 2 and the others cost a small fortune, example The Seven
Sisters by Lucinda Rily!

I really like Ruth Jones’ books as well.

I usually opt for books I can get on kindle unlimited.

@DancefloorAcrobatics, same. I hate getting into a series to find out the next books is really expensive.
