Read What You Own Challenge

I’m going to start a Read What You Own Challenge on the 1st of July to try and reduce down my ridiculously huge TBR both physical and kindle.
My rules for me are-

  • No buying any new books after midday on July 1st
  • Unsubscribe from the kindle daily deals email
  • I am allowed to break it for the Booker Prize longlist when it’s announced, but must check my library for the books first.
  • Keep going until August 21st as my first goal. (Maybe until 2026 in total)
These rules are specific to me and anyone who wants to join me is free to make their own set of rules for their challenge. I’m going to log each book I read here to keep me accountable. Anyone else up for it? I know some 50 Bookers are considering it…

Anne Boleyn - Norah Lofts

Bought this in 2013! Easy read about her life, with the occasional bizarre reference to witchcraft.

Oh I loved the Town House series by Norah Lofts. I got it from the school library when I was 14, then read it again forty years later.
Now you've got me sitting on my hands because I still haven't finished any of my current books so I can't buy more

Finished Soldier Sailor by Claire Kilroy which has only been on my Kindle for 18 months but was an easy win as it's short!

WinterFrogs · 16/11/2025 16:30

I have just finished The Road To Granchester. It was gentle and thought provoking, and I plan to read the whole series one day.

How to be a Woman - Caitlin Moran

Have owned this for years in paperback and I think I must have read it before, but hey! An amusing canter through Moran’s life and feminism.

I had this on audible and thought it was good. I know she is disliked by some on MN but i used to enjoy her column in the Times magazine

I have failed, and purchased a second hand paperback.
It may be some time before I get to it as I have just started Women Who Run With The Wolves.

SheilaFentiman · 22/11/2025 10:59

I haven’t stopped buying books at all, if that helps 😀 I’m just trying to read some of what I own

ÚlldemoShúl · 22/11/2025 11:19

I haven’t stopped buying either- still get any 99p kindle deals on my wishlist and any book club books but I’m mostly reading my ‘backlist’ which is what I wanted to do.
A new audio to add to the list The Cutting Room and a DNF Such a Young Age by Killy Reid.

I have finished Tomorrow & Tomorrow & Tomorrow. Very good.

TimeforaGandT · 22/11/2025 19:40

I was underwhelmed by Such a Fun Age although plenty raved about it.

I started Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow but couldn't get into it - perhaps I need to give it another go.....

IlovetoKnitandRead · 23/11/2025 09:16

May I join please? I have paused Audible too having just used up my remaining two credits. I have a shelf full of Slightly Foxed editions to read, far too many Kindle books and an overwhelming amount of paperbacks in my bookcases. I need to do a list of unread books to shock me into action!
Currently reading the second Kristin Lavransdatter novel The Wife on Kindle, listening to The Beekeeper of Aleppo on Audible and reading the final Emmy Lake story, Dear Miss Lake from the library.

Samuel Johnson is Indignant - Lydia Davis

This 200 page paperback of short stories has been on my shelf for at least a decade and probably more. Some of the stories were many pages, others were just a few words. All were well written but this kind of literary experimentation isn’t my preferred way to read!

ÚlldemoShúl · 24/11/2025 20:23

Finished the absolutely massive The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer- a mix of paperback and audio and sometimes both together. (To give a picture of how massive the audio was 57 hours). Delighted to have made it through this one which has been lurking on my shelves for a long time.

Bloody Scotland - various

Anthology of crime stories set in Scotland. Bought this in 2019, not sure why I didn't read it then, but I enjoyed it!

SilverShadowNight · 27/11/2025 08:13

Finished Less by Patrick Grant. Loved this book and strongly agreed with so much of what he says. Very thought provoking.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/11/2025 09:56

I’m in a terrible slump haven’t finished anything for ages

CutFlowers · 27/11/2025 15:34

I have finished the final part of the Kirstin Lavransdatter trilogy, The Cross for the readalong, Things in Nature Merely Grow by Yiyun Li and The Snowdonia Killings by Simon McCleave. Trying to get my TBR pile under 200 by the end of the year - current tally is 206.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/11/2025 16:00

Hauled myself through Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes over lunch.

SheilaFentiman · 27/11/2025 16:30

well done for de-slumping, Eine

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/11/2025 16:40

Cheers

ÚlldemoShúl · 27/11/2025 18:09

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit even if you didn’t love it at least it’s one step closer to ending the slump

Yes pick things that will make you feel good! When I’m in a slump I like fast-paced to get me through!
