Read What You Own Challenge

I’m going to start a Read What You Own Challenge on the 1st of July to try and reduce down my ridiculously huge TBR both physical and kindle.
My rules for me are-

  • No buying any new books after midday on July 1st
  • Unsubscribe from the kindle daily deals email
  • I am allowed to break it for the Booker Prize longlist when it’s announced, but must check my library for the books first.
  • Keep going until August 21st as my first goal. (Maybe until 2026 in total)
These rules are specific to me and anyone who wants to join me is free to make their own set of rules for their challenge. I’m going to log each book I read here to keep me accountable. Anyone else up for it? I know some 50 Bookers are considering it…

I tend to switch membership on and off when I feel I have enough books!

SilverShadowNight · 23/08/2025 20:59

I love my Audible subscription. It has really helped me to increase the amount of books I read.

I thought the latest 2 for 1 sale had some great titles in it too.

Yes the recent sale was good- they can be hit or miss sometimes. I do love my audio reads so think I’ll stick with it for now.

I've just cancelled my Audilble membership this week. Had it on pause for three months and was due to resume today but I've not really missed it, as I've found quite a few good audiobooks on Libby and Borrowbox. Downside of course is the wait list for the more popular ones but I guess if I'm desperate for a particular title I can always resubscribe.

When I went to cancel my Audible sub, it did give me an option to pay less for three months (I think?). So that's always something to consider. You need to do it on your laptop, you cant do it from the app. I just have so many subscriptions, I felt it was time to let my Audible one go. I've been neglecting my paid podcasts/ substacks to listen to Audible, so its the right decision for me.

I did not have any unused credits lol. Not a chance! LOL

I was looking at my Facebook memories this morning and I posted up a modest TBR pile with only 12 books. Just shows how out of hand my habit has gone. And out of that 12, I think I have only read 4. So I think I know which my next 8 books are going to be :)

Re: audible.
I've got a kindle with SO many books on...
Plus my huge physical tbr pile.
I listen to podcasts on patreon and BBC sounds.
I really don't need it.

It’s the 50 Bookers thread- keeps making my wishlist longer lol.
I don’t listen to any podcasts so Audible and book reviewers on YouRube are my audio entertainment (although I do use Libby and BorrowBox from my library too)

That definitely sounds like a good plan for you.

Finished another Parable of the Talents. Took me a long time to get through this one.

Have finished Strong Female Character by Fern Brady and The Wreath by Sigrid Unset but the latter is book one in a trilogy so Kindle pile only reduced by 1!

SheilaFentiman · 25/08/2025 11:30

A Cheesemonger’s History of the British Isles - Ned Palmer Finally one off the paper book TBR pile, I got this in 2021 or so. The cover was the best thing about it and it was a real effort to finish!

Peridot1 · 25/08/2025 16:39

Finally finished A Lady Cyclist’s Guide to Kashgar.

About to start None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell.

I haven’t bought too much I don’t think - a book about the making of The West Wing and a book called Hack Yourself Healthy by Julia Bradbury at Carfest on Saturday.

And I have booked myself a week away by myself next month. Last time I did that I read 7 books in 7 days. I’m way behind on my annual Good Reads challenge of 52 books which I do with my sister every year. Must read more and scroll less!

swampwitch0 · 25/08/2025 17:23

@Peridot1
That sounds amazing 👏

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 25/08/2025 18:00

@Peridot1 I did None Of This Is True as an audiobook and thought it was brilliant. It has its naysayers though, plenty on the Disappointing Bestsellers thread. So I really hope you like it. If the West Wing book is What Next? then I found it interesting but a bit worthy. Love the West Wing have watched in full several times

swampwitch0 · 25/08/2025 18:02

<cough>
One of my dc is named after a West Wing character 😬😃

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 25/08/2025 18:21

@swampwitch0 Claudia Jean?!

Tarragon123 · 25/08/2025 18:35

@swampwitch0 - Donna? Charlie? Kirsten Chenoweth??

swampwitch0 · 25/08/2025 18:55

😃

ÚlldemoShúl · 25/08/2025 18:57

@swampwitch0 Mrs Landingham? Would be a great name for a DC surely…

But more of a minor character...

Tarragon123 · 25/08/2025 21:19

I'm getting The West Wing and 24 mixed up, but did the Bartlett's have a daughter in the White House? Is that who your daughter is name after?
