I would love to listen to audiobooks on my commute, but every time I have tried a subscription to audible, it never works for me. I find I cannot concentrate, think the narrator is reading too slowly and I just find my mind drifting. I am probably just not listening by to the right narrators. Has anyone got any recommendations?

I recommend The vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O farrell, read by a Daniella Nardine (sp?)
Fabulous book and narrater ( naratter is female and scottish for those that love the accent!)
Narrator is just as important as story imo.

I listen to a lot of books now, but I can only ever concentrate when I'm also doing something else like driving, sewing, cleaning the kitchen etc. Otherwise my brain starts thinking of other things and I realise that I haven't actually heard anything for 10 mins or so.

Yes! This is me too, I don't have the attention span just to sit and listen, so only try if I'm on a run, cleaning the house etc.

Absolutely find the speed button and have a play about with it. I listen at 1.2 as a default and often need to speed up even more but very rarely listen at slower than this.
Type free into the search bar and try a few different ones to see what grabs you. The free books aren't all old or rubbish - I listened to loads of good stuff by current authors. I guess they make a book available for free to try and hook people who will then pay for others by the same author if they enjoy it.

Just jumping on to say if you’re in the uk try the Libby app. It’s free and you just put in your library memberships and can download available books. I listen to books on my commute and while I do housework/get ready for the day etc

I mentioned Borrowbox earlier which sounds the same, I'll look into the Libby App too in case it has different titles, hadn't heard of it before so thanks.

Regarding Borrowbox / Libby, I think it depends on your local library service which one they use. Fairly sure most only use one or the other.

Stephen Fry reading Jeeves & Wooster and Sherlock Holmes is a joy to listen to. If you are an Audible member his series on the Secrets of the Victorians, Edwardians and the Roaring 20's is also a great listen. Actually anything audible book/series he has done has been great

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie read by Adjoa Andoh is brilliantly narrated

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver read by Jeremy Northam is excellent, very unnerving if you like something scary

Agree that The Heart's Invisible Furies is excellently narrated and The London Rivers Series read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith

Really enjoyed The Shinning by Stephen King narrated by Campbell Scott. I downloaded the follow up Dr Sleep narrated Will Patton. His pronoucetaion of some words are so much like Trumps (I have listen to other books he has narrated and really enjoyed then and not noticed this before, but now I have I can't unhear it

I do not enjoy the narration when it is very theatrical so some actors narration I have not enjoyed, especially with the classics

In case anyone isn't aware, if you have an Amazon Music subscription you get one Audible credit included each month. Use it or lose it.

I tend to listen to the sample first just in case the narrator has a voice that I don't get along with.

Agree with Lisa Jewell, and if you like these kinds of books the Claire Douglas ones are good too.

Some I've enjoyed recently:
The Wedding People by Alison Espach
So Thrilled for You by Holly Bourne
Rachel's Holiday read by the author Marian Keyes
The Examiner by Janice Hallett (all her others are good too)

The testaments is a great audio book. 3 narrators - all fantastic

VoltaireMittyDream · 19/06/2025 01:52

Fiona Shaw reading Anne Enright. Unbeatable.

ThePoshUns · 23/07/2025 22:23

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
The Dutch House by Ann Patchett - narrated by Tom Hanks, sublime.
