Ruth Galloway series

Trying to get into this, because I like both crime and archaeology. The first one was decent. because I liked the setting.

But now another book- all Ruth does is obsess over how fat she is, and how slim everyone else is. A mention in every chapter! It's put me off.

Any other series with crime, archaeology and so forth?
Read CJ Sansom already.

Have you read any Kate Ellis? Her Wesley Peterson novels combine crime with archaeology / history in an interesting way. There is usually a modern day police case and an historical or archaeological mystery that are in some way connected.

I’ve read all the Ruth books - her obsession with her looks is really annoying but you get to know a whole cast of characters over time and it is dialled down a bit as the series goes on

I love these books, but I'd recommend not reading them all back to back, because the characters peculiarities do become a bit wearing if you get too much of them. They are great read a bit more spread out though.

And I don't mind a bit of obsessing over weight/shape. It's how a lot of women genuinely think, after all.

I love Ruth Galloway and the Kate Ellis books. I think Ruth is a great character - middle aged and clever.

Thanks @Lucienandjean . Ruth may be clever, but all the pining for Harry and talking about her weight is annoying me.
Especially as have just finished the Kinsey Millhone series ( mostly).

I used to really like them until I noticed that, towards the end, there was quite often a race against the clock to rescue someone.

It probably didn't happen as much as I thought it did but once I started noticing it, it seemed to loom large-not unlike the way Ruth is constantly thinking she does.

Yes, it was in every book and it did get tedious. Then one of Nelson's grown up daughters appeared to be on the verge of having an eating disorder too. I wonder if someone had a word with Elly Griffiths about it, because it stopped after that.

I enjoyed them but agree they do become more formulaic as they go on.

A bit left field, as its not strictly archaeology, but I really liked Ruth Downie's Medicus series. Crime stories, amusingly written but set in Roman Britain with the protagonist being a doctor in a Roman legion.

Another fan of the Wesley Peterson series here. So many of the regular characters are likeable, which makes a change!
