I recently discovered Jane Casey and have sped through all her Maeve Kerrigan series which I loved. I also really enjoy Cara Hunters Fawley series. Any suggestions for similar authors I may like? Thanks!

Tana French has a similar vibe - plenty of younger, female protagonists, but she tends to write about characters in the same world rather than focus on one central protagonist and write consistently from her point of view for a long series. The Icelandic writer, Yrsa Sigurdardottir also tends to base her narratives around a younger woman. I agree with you about Jane Casey. I love Maeve and find her very authentic - sympathetic, but not to the point of being drippy. There's more to a woman than being kind and looking good. As for Derwent, what can one say? My thoughts about him tend to involve ambushing him in a stationery cupboard. . .

I've enjoyed the Marion Todd series which features a female DI. Similar style to Cara Hunter.

The Strike books are very good.

Susan Hill does a decent detective series.

Damien Boyd does a series of books, often cheap on kindles.

The Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling) are good.

Thank you! I've not read any Tana French but my mum has some on her bookcase so will borrow these. Haven't heard of Yrsa before so will check her out too.

Ah I think Maeve is brilliant. Annoyed at myself for reading them all so quickly! Fingers crossed for another book soon.

Thanks. I haven't read those. Enjoyed the casual vacancy by JK though so will look at these too

Thank you. I have read a Susan Hill standalone which I didn't love, but I think that was more because one of the characters really bugged me. So will take a look at the detective series and give her another go.

Jackson Brodie books by Kate Atkinson are great

I came to say Tana French as well! I like a lot of crime books and enjoy plenty that are fairly disposable quick reads (eg Harlan Conan) but she is one that has stuck with me through sheer writing quality, they’re very atmospheric.

Really enjoyed In The Blink of an Eye by Jo Callaghan recently, and JD Kirk’s Logan series has a team with a similar vibe to Fawley + co (but they do get a bit samey after a while)

M J Arlidge - Helen Grace series
Helen Fields -D I Callanach series
OMJ Ryan - Jane phillips series
Jo Callaghan- DCS Kat Frank series. bit different but excellent
Sally Rigby -Cavendish & Walker and also the Cornwall murders
Rachel Lynch - Kelly Porter

not female leads but excellent murder/detectives:

M W Craven -Washington Poe series

Agree re Robert Galbraith Strike series too

sure i will think of more as am a bookaholic!

Been meaning to read Jane Casey. Is the MK series very violent? Had to give up reading Patricia Carswell for that reason.

LordJohnGrey · 29/04/2025 11:28

Have you seen the new Mauve Kerrigan out this week? The Secret Room.

I loved the DI Callanach series by Helen Fields, very much the same vibe.

summerscomingsoon · 29/04/2025 11:48

I received the secret room yesterday. Going to read it this weekend :)

I wouldn't say it's particularly violent. Some of the cases are more violent than others (some include violence against women) but they aren't graphic.
