Hi there. A bit overwhelmed by the number of books on Kindle Unlimited. I like a good detective, mystery or legal thriller. Also a feel good family drama and a rom com that's well written. Historic novels also good. Many thanks for any suggestions.

I love the Maxwell detective books by MJ Trow. A mad school teacher solves crimes while kind of annoying the police.. full of historical references as he's a history teacher and good fun. Also his cat is even worse than mine.

Maxwell's House is the first one i think.

I really enjoyed the 'housemaid' series (quite dark) and at completely the other end of spectrum the very silly, very fun Beatrix Hyde-Clare mysteries (Georgian romcom with peers getting themselves offed in creative ways, but much better written than the usual stuff)

murasaki · 22/04/2025 22:06

I enjoyed the housemaid series too.

There's an awful lot of 1920s detective stuff with female leads if you like that sort ofthing, I do.

murasaki · 22/04/2025 22:07

Tim Sullivan's DI Cross books are good too.

LivingBetter · 22/04/2025 22:38

Joy Ellis is good and she has quite a few on Unlimited if you like a detective series

mangomaggie · 22/04/2025 22:42

If you like a bit of time travel I heartily recommend the Keith A Pearson books. I'd love to read them after. Especially the Clement series

I’ve recently loved Fiona Valpy’s books on KU. They are basically historical chick lit but good ones, really gripping. The main character tends to be a woman, set around WW2. Not quite sure which one comes first but several of them have the same cast of characters. All her books are listed at https://www.fionavalpy.com/books-2022/

Read the first Housemaid one as it kept coming up and really hated it!

Thankfully all her books are KU so you can return them. Did the first three of the Housemaid series and not bothered since then. Bit of an easy read, so easily can pick them up, if not in the mood for anything too heavy!

Peter Grainger's DC Smith series are only available on Kindle, but I just discovered them thanks to an article in the FT. Beautifully written about a detective in East Anglia (King's Lynn thinly disguised). Apparently also excellent audio books, but I haven't heard them.

MamaNewtNewt · 24/04/2025 08:47

The books by Brianna Labuskes are pretty good.
Day One by Abigail Dean
Kala by Colin Walsh
The Quantum Curators series
Zikora by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
The Survivors Club by Lisa Gardner
Little Ghosts by Gregg Dunnett
Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher

MamaNewtNewt · 24/04/2025 08:50

I’m also currently reading Diva by Daisy Goodwin, a fictional account of the life of Maria Callas and I’m really enjoying it.

Copperas · 24/04/2025 08:53

Thumbs up for Peter Grainger! I raced through them after reading the same article in the FT . Strongly recommend them.

Jane Dunn writes very good Regency era fiction. There are thousands of really terrible wannabe Georgette Heyer books on Kindle Unlimited, but hers are a cut above.

I have enjoyed Fran Smith's Vita Carew mysteries, set in Edwardian times. She also wrote some very readable books about Sister B, a nun, told in letters to a pen-pal. The Power of Cake is one. I would call them quietly humorous rather than LOL but just the thing if real life is getting you down.

My best find on KU is The Unselected Journals of Emma M Lion by Beth Brower. Set in a not-quite-London in Victorian times, they are quite magical. I eagerly await each new volume.

Papyrophile · 24/04/2025 21:45

@Copperas, DC Smith rocks. I haven't enjoyed a new-to-me author as much for a couple of years, and I am also racing through them. Page turners AND beautifully written with exceptionally good characters and development. I am trying to ration them now so that I have one or two for an imminent holiday!

Azuresky68 · 25/04/2025 08:38

Thanks so much for all the recommendations everyone! Just got back from holiday. Going to make a list from all the suggestions. I will post a few of my own when I am more organised!

Détective séries by LJRoss set in the north east. There are about 20 books in total

TorturedParentsDepartment · 25/04/2025 08:51

Total braindead fluff but I quite enjoyed The Ex Hex series on there - rom-com with witchy bits and a talking cat. Perfect holiday sun lounger reading.

I am from the NE so loved the settings. Got through a lot of the series but can't remember where I got up to!
