I have decided to go modern and need a kindle or something my books have all gone to charity I didn’t have room. Can you give me your best recommendation for a kindle or e-reader, subscriptions and something I could maybe get library books on. Don’t mind the cost. Will read it at night. Don’t really want ads!

recommendations please 🙏 thank you

I have a Kindle Paperwhite, no ads. Works well. I prefer real books but Kindles are much easier one handed reading in a dark room.

Kindle paperwhite. I have the one with the ads (it’s only on the sleep / Lock Screen) and it’s fab

Kindle paper white. It’s the easiest to just use amazon to find any books. Plus can read at night

Any particular one? 16 gb enough or 32? Thanks

Agree with PPs. My DS and DH also have one and can read “my” books too.

Kindle paperwhite is definitely the go-to e-reader.

I have really noticed though, that I just don’t recall books anywhere near as well when I’ve read them on Kindle. Wonder if anyone else experiences this? I have books on there I know I’ve read but I couldn’t tell you a thing about them!

I’ve mostly gone back to real books that go to the little library at my local post office unless I really want to keep them.

I read kindle books on my phone, I do have a (very old!) Kindle somewhere but never use it.

At night I set it to a black screen with white letters so as not to disturb DP

Kobo Libra. You can borrow ebooks from the library, buy from Kobo store and other retailers. There is a subscription service but doesn't cover all books on Kobo. Classics are free on project Gutenberg.

Don’t overlook the basic kindle. I’ve got one and it’s excellent. Have a look at the differences between the two to see if the extra for the Paperwhite is worth it. If you go for a kindle, you’ll likely get a free or very cheap trial of kindle unlimited. And if you get a kindle, do sign up to kindle daily deal emails. I read a great tip on here to add the kindle books you’re after to a list on Amazon. It’s then very quick to see if any have dropped in price.

I'm a long-term Kobo user and always recommended their ereaders. My one works with OverDrive so can borrow ebooks from public libraries and very rarely need to buy anything 😄

I've signed up to emails from BookBub.com which highlights what's on offer according to categories I'm interested in, it covers both Kindle and Kobo. There's loads of rubbishy self-published stuff but also new releases on limited time offers occasionally.

Definitely get a Kobo if you want to borrow library books. I've got a Kindle and a Kobo and use the Kobo much more because of that.

My lovely DH pulled out a kindle paper white last night as a surprise present at 8pm just when I was thinking of ordering and reading all your comments! So I have a kindle and kindle unlimited - exciting times!

Kindle Paperwhite, without ads. Light and easy to use. Used to have the original Kindle, but the screen light on the new one is a game changer!

QuartzIlikeit · 16/04/2025 13:42

Kindle paperwhite. Definitely the best e reader around

I use the Kindle app on my iPad. It's far more user-friendly than an actual Kindle and recharges faster as well!

Is the basic kindle backlit now?

I have a Papwrwhite that must be about 12 years old now and is brilliant for reading in bed when I don't want to keep DH awake.

I would never get one that isn't backlit.

It is backlit! I can alter the level of brightness and choose white letters on a black background. Totally agree about backlit kindles being non-negotiable. I find it fantastic for reading at night.

What a lovely DH! You can pay an extra 10 to amazon to be ad free - it's worth it. Now you can enjoy browsing for a lovely case! I really like my fintie case. Lots of designs and it opens up like a book.

PeachPumpkin · 16/04/2025 15:01

Yes! There are some lovely cases around. I like my case so much, I nearly bought my case a case… but then thought that was a step too far.
