I've recently paused my audible membership as I've noticed there are a lot of really good audiobooks to borrow from the library via the Borrowbox and Libby apps. I've enjoyed;

A Bird in Winter by Louise Doughty
Machines Like Me by Ian McEwan
Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan
Of Ants and Dinosaurs by Cixin Lui
What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
The Missing Pieces of Sophie McCarthy by B M Carroll
The Chameleon's Shadow by Minette Walters
The Vanishing Point by Val McDermid

And I have lots more on my wish list.

Yes, I use Borrowbox too. I tend to use Audible for new releases-as they might have a long waitlist at Borrowbox or books that I might want to keep.

I like to mix and match! Have you tried Libby-my library offers this too. It doesn't have as much choice but it is another alternative.

I also use Libby, some of the books I recommended were from the Libby app.

Libby also has lots of Agatha Christie books, which I sometimes listen to if I can't fall asleep. They're very comforting somehow.

Is Borrowbox the same regardless of which library you are a member of? I thought it depended on the library. Mine has no Robert Galbraith which I was surprised about.

dabby · 11/04/2025 07:25

Libby depends on which library you belong to, not sure about borrowbox.

i really enjoyed the audiobook Simon Serrailer series by Susan Hill on my Libby, so much depends on the narration doesn't it.

springintoaction321 · 11/04/2025 08:14

I listened to the House on the Strand (Daphne du Maurier) on Borrowbox and reader totally made the book with his acting skills etc.

EmpressaurusKitty · 11/04/2025 08:33

The Georgette Heyers on BorrowBox are my favourite easy listening.

I don't think so, I think it's linked to the county where you're a member of the library.

Our Borrowbox is brilliant because our county libraries are part of LibrariesWest which covers a huge area so I assume that meant there was more money in the pot for more books.

But I used to live in a different county which had a basic audiobook/book supply through Libby. It really wasn't that good and so was worth being a member of Audible then. It really isn't worth it now and I've often found books I've bought have then arrived on Borrowbox a short while later.

My Libby has loads of magazines on, love it! However, I can’t find the audiobooks. Is it specific to the library it’s linked to?

vandelier · 11/04/2025 19:49

I just got an alert that "The rivers of London" was ready for me on Borrowbox. Happy weekend listening so!

There are so many audio books out there, brilliant as you all know for when doing the housework, walking, gardening, hols, long journeys and so on.

Everyone's tastes are different. I normally go for biography and have listened to a few crackers for sure.

Sometimes the wait list is weeks or even months away, but I borrow something in the meantime if the wait is for something special.

FritataPatate · 11/04/2025 20:41

I really enjoyed A Bird in Winter too! Louise Doughty was a new author to me and on the strength of this one I went on to listen to Platform Seven, which was different but also good.

GetMeOutOfMeta · 11/04/2025 21:41

Downloaded these today as I have jacked in Amazon (thank you Trump for making me take that plunge!) and Audible went with it. Looking forward to these free ones instead now! So thankful to be in a country where no book is banned.

toooldforbrat · 11/04/2025 21:45

I find it frustrating with BorrowBox & libby that they have missing books in a series so I have to go to audible for those.

but otherwise I love both.

i use various relatives addresses for library cards from different areas… maybe a bit naughty but gives a good selection .

AlphaRadiationIsHeliumNuclei · 12/04/2025 06:56

I've just started listening to a Peter James novel, one of the Detective Grace series I'm enjoying it, it's 18 hours long and there are lots more of them!

I also like the Rivers of London books. 🙂

I use BorrowBox as much as I can but sometimes have to resort to Audible to get a new release or complete a series.

I’ve recently enjoyed The Killings at Badger’s Drift by Caroline Graham. (It’s the first in the Midsomer Murders series.) Also just listened to a couple of Liane Moriarty’s books (Apples Never Fall and Nine Perfect Strangers) which I loved and will definitely listen to more of hers. A surprise listen that I enjoyed was Red Queen by Juan Gomez Jurado. It was a surprise because I thought I’d downloaded a fantasy book with a similar title 🤣 but it was very engaging.

Ietthemeatcake · 12/04/2025 09:26

I've just listened to People Like Her by Ellery Lloyd which I enjoyed, I've also listened to a few by Stacey Halls (The Foundling, The Familiars and Mrs England) which are all historical dramas.

The Wives By Tarryn Fisher

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 12/04/2025 09:39

I have both. Still getting my head around Borrow Box though as so many audio books are unavailable due to already being out on loan

BeaAndBen · 12/04/2025 09:42

You just reserve them, @sandrapinchedmysandwich and they automatically download when they’re available. I’ve always got two or three titles reserved, waiting to become free.

AlphaRadiationIsHeliumNuclei · 12/04/2025 10:43

On my Borrowbox app I have reserves that I will receive in May, June, 2 in July and another in August!
