Returning to reading - light be engaging suggestions please

After years of not reading, I've picked up a book and remember how much I used to enjoy a good book. Embarrassingly perhaps, that book is the Hunger Games... Next up is another old favourite, Water for Elephants. I used to enjoy Jodi Picoult and Nicolas Sparks, but don't want to return to either as I feel I've over-read and outgrown them, and I hated Marian Keyes (sorry). Examples only as otherwise I appreciate it's difficult to suggest anything.

Light, easy, heartwarming reads welcome please as I think I need some happy, engaging books to ease back in... Suggestions welcome, TIA!

David Nicholls?
Jojo Moyes?

It's not embarrassing! You read whatever you enjoy!

I know someone who often reads young adult and children's books. He says they're often very well written and not too long. Frank cotteral Boyce is his fave I think.

Personally, I love a good Agatha Christie when I don't want anything taxing

@SantasbigredbobblehatI always shy away from those authors, not sure why... Is there a specific book of either of theirs you'd recommend?

@Windywuss I've never tried Agatha Cristie either... Again, is there a good starting one you'd recommend?

Not really sure what I'm after in all honesty, it's been such a long time since I read anything new...

I'd go with The Body in the Library or Murder at the Vicarage. The language can be quite dated but I loved them as a teen and I still love them now. My favourite summer read.

I'd definitely do Miss Marple over Poirot but that's just personal preference. There's some great Poirot books.

Try David Nicholls latest one. You Are Here. It’s sweet and funny.

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill

Agatha Christie really is very good. She’s become a classic for a reason. How about Sherlock Holmes? Maybe listen to the Stephen Fry audiobooks.

Or how about the Shardlake novels? My mother is bloody obsessed with them and tells me all the plots in detail.🙄

I am enjoying Slow Horses audiobook just now. Absolutely loved the TV show but they're good books by all accounts. So far I'd agree.

Got some good humour in them. Spy stuff!

During lockdown when I needed something easy and cheerful I read James Herriot's Yorkshire vet books. If Only They Could Talk is the first one.

EmpressaurusKitty · 09/04/2025 17:31

Jane Fallon? My favourite thing about her books is the focus on female friendship.

TheRookieMum · 16/04/2025 22:36

Oh a good range of choices, thanks!

Did enjoy Slow Horses, didn't know there were books.

Vet books, right up my street. Female friendships depends what else is going on...

Thanks!
