I've just started reading it and it's brilliant. I actually work part time in a bookshop and all the hype around it when it came out put me off tbh.

Found a copy today and picked it up. Well worth reading for anyone who likes non fiction and memoirs

One of the best books I've ever read.

Dearover · 30/03/2025 19:54

It left me wanting to know more about how she did it. I read it a few years ago now, but from memory there didn't seem to be much insight into how she managed to tick all the boxes to get into Cambridge etc

Tinytigertail · 30/03/2025 19:55

Great book, she's amazing isn't she?

MilnersGold · 30/03/2025 19:56

I'm only a third of the way through having got it this afternoon and about to read a lot more!

Actually, I think I was reading it when Dd was applying to uni. I must have been looking for the secret!

titchy · 30/03/2025 19:57

Weren’t a couple of her siblings also incredibly academic?

MilnersGold · 30/03/2025 19:59

As far as I've got Tyler was and he's just left to go to college. Having a ASD child he's obviously on the spectrum, how he managed it I have no idea

I'm skiing in Austria and this is the book I have with me! I'm about a third of the way through too. I'm not sure I can be in this thread as don't want any spoilers.

HappyHedgehog247 · 30/03/2025 20:07

this book found me in a guesthouse book exchange. I had no expectations as was amongst a bunch of romcom/chick lit and then I couldn't put it down! Enjoy!!!!

MilnersGold · 30/03/2025 20:12

I don't want any spoilers either! But that feeling when you discover (later than most people) a really special book and just have to tell someone!

I really enjoyed this, her parents failure to protect her from her brother was disgusting though

NeedToKnow101 · 30/03/2025 20:33

Absolutely brilliant. Funnily enough, I never re-read books, but last night I was pondering on re-reading it.

CornishTiger · 30/03/2025 20:46

I’ve had this is my to read pile for years. Will promote it to the top!

OhCobblers · 30/03/2025 20:49

I thought this was an utterly brilliant book! An incredible woman.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 31/03/2025 21:11

I read this a few years ago - can’t remember all the details but do remember I loved it!

MsAmerica · 02/04/2025 02:46

I heard about how great it was, but just was reluctant to tackle it with so many other things to read.
But now I just saw it linked/compared with Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance. That also had great reviews so that I meant to get around with it, but after he was nominated for the U.S. vice presidency, although I was even more curious, I hated him so much that I absolutely refused to spend a penny on it, and waited months for it to be available at the library. It was fine, not great, but now I'm more curious about Westover.

ImWearingPantaloons · 02/04/2025 10:24

I read it quite a while ago so can’t remember specifics but I do remember enjoying it.

I think I’ll revisit it soon

AlwaysFreezing · 13/04/2025 08:15

I also really enjoyed it. I watched the bill gates documentary while I was reading it and he goes to his cabin for down time and reads. That book was at the top of his book bag.

Changingplace · 13/04/2025 08:18

I thought the story was full of inconsistencies and holes and her family have called out a lot of it as untrue.

Don’t want to post any spoilers by adding details.

Her mum has written her own account which I’ve not read yet but I’d be interested to read.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 13/04/2025 08:33

I enjoyed this book, but remember thinking it seemed incredible and in parts unlikely. I need to google.

If it was all true then it’s amazing.

JoanOgden · 13/04/2025 08:40

I hated it - partly because it included so many graphic descriptions of violence and horrible accidents, but also somehow I felt it didn't ring true. Would be interested to read more details about the controversy,

EmotionallyWeird · 13/04/2025 18:24

I found it interesting but have heard about the claims that parts of it are not true, and now I don't know what to think. She didn't change the names of everybody in the family and I have heard that it's possible to find some of them on social media, and in particular, that the injuries the father suffered don't appear to have been anything like as extreme as the description in the book. I don't know whether she's the one who falsified things or whether the parents did in order to promote their remedies, but if one thing is visibly not what is claimed, it does make you wonder about the rest.

A friend who was once in an abusive relationship (with a husband in her case) said it all rang true to her.

PlanetOtter · 14/04/2025 16:45

Does anyone know what she’s doing now? I know she’s living in London but she’s not become a public figure in the way you might have expected.

mismomary · 17/04/2025 10:39

Just started following her on instagram so we will see!

PickledOnionOverdose · 19/04/2025 16:18

This book is not nearly as good as The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. I read Educated after the Glass Castle and felt it woefully lacking. Not nearly as descriptive.
