Hi I am looking to send a book to a friend who is recovering from hospital. An easy read that is uplifting with humour would be ideal. Any recommendations?

Might depend on her age/ circumstances, but I really enjoyed Confessions of a forty something f**k up! I also love re-reading the James Herriot all creatures great and small books.

I really enjoyed Rachel Joyce’s Miss Bensons Beetle . Picked it up in a charity shop and wasn’t sure - was really good , funny , moving and uplifting with an unusual setting . Really it’s about friendship .

A Tiny Bit Marvellous by Dawn French

Pancakeflipper · 27/03/2025 15:24

Frank and Red by Matt Coyne ? (Or is it Red and Frank?).

Anyway - I read that whilst in hospital. Easy to pick up and put down.

Nobody comes close to P G Wodehouse. Listening to Stephen Fry read him on audiobook is close to heaven. Wodehouse isn’t just funny, he’s joyful beyond words.

Douglas Adams always cheers me up. I always find Patrick Fermor uplifting as well, especially A Time of Gifts.

Alltheburpees · 27/03/2025 16:29

Any Bill Bryson.

I'm currently reading the Nora Roberts Irish Trilogy; first book called Jewels of the Sun.

Light-hearted and easy to read. I've been in a real funk with books this year and this has entertained me for the last few days. I've just downloaded Book 2 (Tears of the Moon)

Any Georgette Heyer .
Stella Gibbons- Cold comfort farm.

Emily Wildes Encyclopedia of Fairies was easy and charming as was The House in the Cerulean Sea.

Sifflet · 27/03/2025 18:35

Laurie Colwin’s Family Happiness or A Big Storm Knocked It Over. Clever, light-hearted, tough-minded, latter-day Jane Austen.

A strong recommend for Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day. It's perfect.

LardoBurrows · 27/03/2025 19:13

My family and other animals by Gerald Durrell, very gentle and funny.

Might not be everybody's cup of tea, but I love the Just William books, they make me howl with laughter and have done for years and the audio books read by Martin Jarvis are fantastic.

BadgerFace · 27/03/2025 19:15
