I'm trying to find a YA book set in 30s/40s London, about a girl named Marjorie or Mollie, she had a dog called Buller, and a best friend named Keziah who was Jewish. She has no mother and was sent to live with family (an aunt I think?) Who is casually quite cruel to her emotionally. I wish I could remember title and author.

I seem to recall it was maybe published by Lions teen tracks...

I don't think it involved a train but I will have a look. Thanks.

Was she evacuated from London to escape the war bombings? (By train, I presume?)

No not evacuated. I think it may have been 1930s come to think of it . Her father wasn't around (can't remember why now, working abroad I think). I do remember her aunt used to make her sing a song about being a beggar girl whose mum is dead, as a way of taunting her.

The buller family by Diane Armstrong

It's 'No End to Yesterday', by Shelagh MacDonald.

It's set in the 20s mainly. She lived with her dad's family- grandparents, and uncle and aunts. The grandmother in particular was very cruel.

It was one of my absolute favourites so I remember it well. I have very battered copy on a bookshelf somewhere!

I'm so glad, it's a wonderful book. Decided to order from eBay UK so I can enjoy it again. Again, thanks so much

Interesting to see what ChatGpt throws up. Seen it a few times on these kind of threads and usually a bit wayward.

I remember No End To Yesterday well. It was an interesting read even as a teenager, but If like to read it again and see if there were any nuances I didn't pick up on.
