Started this series last weekend (after someone mentioned them on here). I'm just about to finish book 2 and I'm totally hooked.

Thank you who ever made me research them. Loving them 👍🏼

I finished the series a few weeks ago, and absolutely loved them. I still feel a bit sad that I've finished them and still hope Elly Griffiths will add more in the future.

HerBigChance · 24/03/2025 02:59

5he is an excellent middle-aged female character. Properly developed and fully realised. I love those books too.

Therealmetherealme · 24/03/2025 05:51

I found I really liked the first, but the second wasn’t as good. Should I try number 3?

BG2015 · 24/03/2025 06:18

Finished #2 last night. Downloaded 3. Pity I've got to go to work.

Oh, I love Ellie Griffiths- and not just because we once had a lovely chat online after I spotted some clues to a niche shared interest in one of her books! I like her Harbinder Kaur character too. Not so keen on The Brighton Mysteries. But she has a very promising new character in her latest The Frozen People..

BG2015 · 24/03/2025 12:37

I love it when I find a new author with loads of books to go at!

Love love love Ruth Galloway series and have read them all . Enjoyed a few Harbinder Kaur , and whilst just finished The Frozen People , I don't think the main female character really got going ( can't even remember her name ) .

TonTonMacoute · 24/03/2025 17:40

Another fan of Ruth Galloway here too. The stories are good, but the characters are so well rounded. They're well written and very funny. I think I'm on book 6 or 7, I'm trying to make them last

I like the Harbinder Kaur books too, but just don't get the Brighton Mysteries at all.

suburburban · 24/03/2025 17:43

I like them too

PrettyDetails · 24/03/2025 18:40

I used to really like her but started to notice that many of them end up in some variation of race against the clock which spoiled them for me.

Mothership4two · 24/03/2025 20:25

I have read the first three and have several sitting in the bookcase. I'm not much of a thriller reader so have to be in the mood.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/03/2025 20:28

I’ve read them all but found them a bit repetitive after a while.

Yiayoula · 27/03/2025 00:54

I enjoyed them at first , but agree they became repetitive. And I could quite cheerfully have murdered Cathbad …..

Toddlerteaplease · 27/03/2025 15:30

Quite agree about Cathbad. How on earth is he involved in every storyline in some way.

Ddakji · 27/03/2025 15:34

Love love love this series.

Quite like the Harbinder ones though she’s a little humourless.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/03/2025 15:34

I'm reading the series now in order having dipped in and out over the past few years. I'm on Book 11 (I think) now, but like a pp I'd advise pacing yourself and reading other stuff in between, otherwise the similarities in books will drive you mad.

But Ruth is a wonderful heroine.

Ddakji · 27/03/2025 15:35

Come on people - don’t spoilt them for the OP with your critiques, she’s only just started reading them!

Seeline · 27/03/2025 16:04

I love the Ruth Galloway series and am slightly grieving the fact that I've reached the end of the series. I feel like she was an actual friend 😁 Fallen in love with Norfolk too!
I like Harbinder, but not the Brighton ones.
Looking forward to starting the Frozen People.

BG2015 · 27/03/2025 16:30

I'm on #3 and will read a few other books after this one. You can only buy book 4 in a set on Kindle which includes, 4,5 and 6 for £10.99. I'll get that next after I've had a change of genre.

If you like Ruth, you might also like Anne Cleeves’ Jimmy Perez. Not even remotely the same, of course, but….

HilaryThorpe · 28/03/2025 06:31

I was disappointed by The Frozen People. I think Jodi Taylor does it much better with both St Mary's and the Time Police series.

Totally agree with you.
I know it's the first in the series but I felt it never got going , I didn't connect with the character and felt we wasn't given much about her .
I will keep an open mind and read the second one though.

WhoTookTheTeaspoons · 28/03/2025 07:10

I've just read The Frozen People. I do agree that it took a while for the story to get going, and there were some plotlines that remained unresolved at the end, so I wonder whether they will be reopened and visited in the next one.

Having said that, it's off to a promising start. I like Ali Dawson and I'll be reading the second one when it's out.

I haven't read Jodi Taylor's series so can't compare how she does time travel. Maybe I should give them a go too.

HilaryThorpe · 28/03/2025 08:04

I would start with the St Mary's series. The first one is "Just One Damned Thing After Another."
I love them.

BG2015 · 28/05/2025 07:26

Just started book #7 The Woman in Blue.
Spacing them out but always eager to read the next one.

Im noticing a pattern in plot too, but happy to just go with them. It's like a warm hug each time I open the book.
