How many books do you usually have on the go

I started reading the second of the Shardlake series expecting to love it but I just couldn't stay engaged to complete in one go. Im now reading chunks of it between other books as i do want to finish it. I have a short story collection I'm dipping into also, plus I've started a Stephen King book and I'm listening to a non-fiction on audio.

So, four things on the go at the moment. Interested to hear from other people on their reading habits

At least two (as I'm in two book clubs) but usually have at least one other on the go as well.

GoatCatTaco · 23/03/2025 10:53

One at a time!
I HATED I at school where we had a book on the go in English, and if I wanted to read anything else, you had to have 2 on the go. I can't cope with switching between storylines.
I'm also very much happier now catch up tv exists, and I can binge watch one series, then switch to something else, rather than watching 3 different things, each on once a week.

A book club one, a fiction of my choice, a coffee table or artbook to look through and sometimes an audible.

I try and restrict it to one. I’m one of those people who has to finish a book, even if they’re not enjoying it, so having two or three on the go stresses me out! Also, I have been following Harold Bloom’s famous list for years, and so when I don’t finish something he recommends I feel guilty. Unfortunately, if I’m not enjoying it, I tend to start something else and end up resentfully wading through the book I’m not enjoying while staring longingly at the one I’ve just started!

Last week I read Daniel Defoe’s Moll Flanders and found it a bit of a grind. Like so many novels it starts well then sags in the middle. I had several other books by my bedside that I have been meaning to read (Orbital, Evelyn Waugh’s Vile Bodies, Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, etc) and began hating Moll Flanders for taking up my time. But it’s on Bloom’s list, and so must be finished🙄

I usually have 2-3 on the go but I’m trying to read one at a time at the moment!

Cherrypi · 23/03/2025 14:04

I try to limit myself to four else it gets out of hand and I don't finish anything.

Buttonknot · 23/03/2025 14:06

Usually two - one on kindle and one on audible.

CookingFatCat · 23/03/2025 14:08

I have fiction a book I’m reading and a book on audible which is self development or psychology.

Honnomushi · 23/03/2025 14:14

Maximum of 3, a physical book, ebook and audio book

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/03/2025 15:08

Only one book I'm actually reading (as a paper book or on Kindle). Plus usually one non-fiction audiobook and one foreign fiction audiobook (in the foreign language). I would never be reading two fiction books at once.

PurpleChrayn · 23/03/2025 19:08

I’m currently reading two on Kindle (Naomi Alderman’s “The Lessons” and Lottie Hazell’s “Piglet”), and two in hard copy - “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn and “Greengage Summer” by Rumer Godden.

Powderblue1 · 23/03/2025 19:13

I have two paperbacks and an e book on the go at the same time

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 23/03/2025 19:14

I'm a one at a time person, but I read super fast.

DoAWheelie · 23/03/2025 19:19

Usually one kindle book and one audiobook at a time.

If I start something else I find I end up never going back to the original one, so I just keep it to one of each at a time.

WhoTookTheTeaspoons · 23/03/2025 19:20

Currently I've got six books on the go. One is a monthly read, one a weekly read, three are daily reads (all just a few pages of non-fiction each), and a novel on my kindle. I may add an audiobook tomorrow to keep me company as I do jobs around the house.

tobee · 26/03/2025 18:55

One to read and one to listen to. They need to be as different as possible. I don't like to start 2 new ones at the same time.

Ddakji · 26/03/2025 19:00

One, of course. How can you properly immerse yourself if you’re just dipping in and out?

TheeNotoriousPIG · 26/03/2025 19:13

I try to stick to one, unless I need a break from something very boring, but I have to finish all books... though I put Jane Eyre down for a rest several years ago, and never picked it up again.

Unfortunately, I keep buying new books and sometimes get distracted from the original book that I was reading!

Ddakji · 26/03/2025 19:32

There are too many good books in the world to bother sticking with a book you’re not enjoying! It took me till I was about 45 to realise that!

BunnyRuddington · 26/03/2025 19:37

Usually a short story collection on my phone. A fiction one which will be the main one and a non-fiction book they I usually dip into.

If you put down a book and don't ever pick it up again there's usually a reason. Having said that some of my favourite books I took a few goes to get into.

cheezncrackers · 26/03/2025 19:51

Usually only one at a time, although I've been known to have one that's a bit hard going and one that's an easy read on the go at the same time.

Unless a book is for book group I'll dump it if I'm not enjoying it. There are so many books I want to read that I don't have time to waste on ones that turn out to be crap. Life is short, books are plentiful!

garlictwist · 26/03/2025 20:14

Just one. I can’t cope with more than one and doesn’t it just take ages to finish anything if you have multiple books on the go?

Lyannaa · 26/03/2025 20:15

Two at the most, otherwise I get confused and it’s usually one fiction and the other non fiction.
