Audible without subscription?

Coldmealsadness · 21/03/2025 20:34

I've had Audible for about 6 months but because I won't be able to get another 3 months at the same price, I'm thinking about giving it up. I also read that non subscribers can listen to the free listens which are mostly classics which are my most of my listens are apart from Wolf Hall (inc. in the membership) Does anyone listen for free and are there any restrictions? Like how many you can listen to at once or download for offline?
TIA

If you stop paying the subscription, you can still listen to the books you previously bought with credits but can't listen to anything extra from the audible plus catalogue.

I listen to a lot of free audiobooks from my local library via the Libby and Borrowbox apps. I sometimes have to wait for the titles I want, but I don't mind as it's free!

Make sure you use up your credits before cancelling, otherwise you lose them.

No, I don't think there are free listens on Audible. But you can listen to audio books if you have a Premium subscription to Spotify. And I listen to free audio books via my library membership on Libby and Borrowbox.

Well, I take it back! Apparently you can listen to some audio books for free on Audible but you need an Amazon account. I had no idea!

If you subscribe to Amazon music (instead of Spotify) you get to listen to one audio book per month but have to return it before listening to a new one. Like borrowing it from the library.

I've just given up my current audible subscription because I've found I can get most things through Borrowbox. You will get a 'three months for 99p a month' offer in about six months time so make a note of anything you might want to buy in the meantime!

I drop in and out of my Audible subscription all the time. I generally have it for three or four months in a year. When you stop your subscription you still have an account with them, so I add things to my wishlist as I see them and then buy them when I reactivate my account. As @Latenightreader has said they will send a special offer after a while, usually three months at half price IME. Also when you stop your subscription they offer you a deal to keep the subscription going so it's worth cancelling before you need to.

I also have an Everand subscription which is more of a streaming service like Spotify, I pay about $80 a year for unlimited audio and ebooks. They have a good range that they change regularly so there is always something to listen to but if I want a specific book or a new release then Audible is more likely to have it.

I second the PP who mentioned free audio books from the library. You might not get the same availability, but I've found some great stuff through trying whatever is available.

I know that's true about the cancelling of credits if you cancel the subscription but why on earth is this the case? After all, you've bought and paid for them

I dont think you do lose your credits, do you? Maybe you can pause your account to keep them?
