Don’t you just love it when you have really enjoyed a book and find out there is lots more in the series?

I’ve done this quite a few times the most recent being the Cormoran Strike books by Robert Galbraith. My Mum loaned me the first one ages ago and for some reason I’ve only just got round to reading it.

I really enjoyed it and have got the next six to look forward to reading with another out this year. I’m a couple of hundred pages into The Silkworm and really enjoying it.

Yes! I remember how pleased I was when I read Lindsey Davis's The Silver Pigs (the first in her Falco Roman Murder Mysteries series) then found out there were more. It's also nice to look forward to the next one, but you might not be in the mood for delayed gratification and there's nothing wrong with that.

Flatandhappy · 11/03/2025 23:33

Someone here recommended Jane Casey’s Maeve Kerrigan series and I devoured them all in a week. I was gutted when I came to the end, nothing better than discovering a new series.

Devianinc · 11/03/2025 23:35

I do but then I’m so disappointed in the next books. The housemaids being number one. Book 2 sucked. It didn’t even make sense

Jalapenosplease · 11/03/2025 23:40

God yes!!!! It's a bookworms orgasm!

Frieda McFadden, B A Paris ... Oh I just love finding out 'there's more '

I was Reading a book by Dean Kootz and found out it was book 3 of 5! Did not matter as such as it went back to what happened before that but I now have 1, 2 and 3! Book one was my bookclub book and one of my friends got all 5 books!

Strokethefurrywall · 13/03/2025 12:06

I started reading LJ Ross DCI Ryan series after my mum put me on to Holy Island - am now on book 11 and there are 23 in the series! Delighted. Have read all of Karin Slaughter, all Tess Gerritsen, all of PJ Tracy’s Monterrey series, most Reacher books - finding a new author with a long series is like finding gold.

WeAreNumpties · 13/03/2025 12:27

Oh I love the Lindsey Davis books @Tortielady, I read the first one when I was a teenager.

@Yourinmyspot it is a lovely feeling when that happens, the best one for me was when my husband bought me Dark Fire, which was one of CJ Sansom's books. I was so thrilled there were others as I loved it so much. Really sad there won't be any more, what a talented writer.

Tana433 · 14/03/2025 15:15

Im reading all the Kay Scarpetta books by Patricia Cornwell after being given books 1 to 24 by my aunt. I think there are 28 in the series so far with another due at the end of the year. I am currently on book 9 and really enjoying them.

thepariscrimefiles · 14/03/2025 16:12

For me it was Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan series, M W Craven's Washington Poe books and Helen Field's Perfect series.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 14/03/2025 16:22

Oh absolutely. Years ago I had the choice of a free kindle book from about 5 preselected authors. I'd never heard of any of them but I picked Sleepy head by Mark Billingham. Loved it and then discovered he had about 15 more (at that time) out and spent a few happy few months getting them out of the library, in correct chronological order. Some are better than others but I'm still a huge MB fan and can't wait for his newest offering in the summer.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 14/03/2025 16:24

@Jalapenosplease "a bookworms orgasm" 😂.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 14/03/2025 17:07

Sue Grafton is another author with a long series, I was recommended and have recommended to friends.

Ddakji · 14/03/2025 17:14

I love a good series but not when it starts to drag and goes down the pan. Some authors just don’t know when to wrap things up.

MagpiePi · 14/03/2025 17:20

I spent most of this summer reading The Last Kingdom series by Bernard Cornwell. Absolutely loved the TV series but knew there would be more in the books. I borrowed most of them from a friend but found some missing ones for sale in the library - is that a bookworm multiple orgasm?!
Me and friend still randomly shout ‘shield wall!’ at each other.

I did not realise this was a book series! I’d seen the tv version of the cover and assumed it was based on the programme!

Even though it's not a very long series, I found this with Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club's. The first three were really good but to me the fourth just fell flat, like he'd ran out of steam. He should have left them as a trilogy.

AllotmentTime · 14/03/2025 17:28

I am desperate to find a new series that I like as much as the Cormoran Strike books. Following for inspiration!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 14/03/2025 17:53

@AllotmentTime I've never read the Strike books, so no idea how they might compare but as I mentioned above, can highly recommend the detective Tom Thorn books (starting with Sleepy Head) or detective Declan Miller books (starting with The Last Dance) both by Mark Billingham.

Crime series that I’ve liked include:

The Ruth Galloway series (she’s a forensic archaeologist in Norrh Norfolk)

The Ashes of London series (set just after the Great Fire of London)

Shardlake (set during the reformation)

Malabar House series (set in Bombay just after the Partition of India, featuring India’s first female detective!)

The Rivers of London (set in a sort of magical contemporary London - this one ran out of steam after about 7 or 8 books)

All crime.

wineintrastevere · 14/03/2025 18:44

I picked up the first Ruth Galloway book from a swap box at work and I’m now reading number 15, the last in the series. Really enjoyed getting to know all the characters as their lives move on. I like that I can start a new book and immediately feel immersed in the story.

Came here to say this! They are your next port of call after you’ve finished with Strike OP! Absolutely compulsive

these sound right up my street. Do they need to be read in order?

Eviebeans · 14/03/2025 19:12

A series of books by Susan Hill featuring chief inspector Simon Serailler - bought at a bargain price in a charity shop

I enjoyed them more for reading them in order. Lindsey Davis gives all of her characters an arc - they live, they die and leave a legacy behind them. Marcus Didius Falco (the protagonist in the Falco series) is a lad about town, son of a large, dysfunctional Roman family, very much like those the reader is familiar with. It's easier to follow what happens to them all if you read in order and it also helps you keep track of the politics of Ancient Rome.
