I know this has been out for ages, but I am only getting round to reading it. I am now scared of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, asteroids and just about everything else! Really enjoying the book, but this should come with a health warning for the anxious!

Lol - don't read his Australian one then about big scary spiders etc!

I was the same when I read it! In fact I used to lie in bed at night for weeks worrying about Yellowstone park erupting

I felt the same when I read it, especially the bit about Yellowstone Park being one gigantic volcano waiting to blow its top as that was news to me.

Blueskythinker · 11/05/2008 21:58

Yes! I read this bit last night, and I didn't sleep properly.

But whenever volcanoes etc are discussed or any potential disaster, it is stated that we are due or overdue some catastrophic event.

It happens when it happens.

And agreed, the Australian book does leave a sense that you go there and you might not get out alive!

Not read it I must admit but Horizon was the best thing for that. DS#1 and I rechristened it 'Disaster on the horizon' for that reason.

Struggling to imagine Bill Bryson frightening anyone....

Blueskythinker · 12/05/2008 21:48

Oh he does, and in that amiable chatty way of his, he tells you the world is about to end.
