I heard this serialised on R4 and bought the book. During lockdown a woman finds an abandoned leveret, and saves its life, and they have a sort of relationship, the hare actually has two litters in her house, though it can come and go as it pleases. It's unsentimental and full of interesting observations, and the writing is beautiful and uplifting. It will stay with me for a long time. The hardback has lovely drawings too.

Adding this to my to read list - thank you

ExpensiveBiscuits · 25/02/2025 19:02

I've just got the hardback and I'm really looking forward to reading it.

DrivingThePlot · 25/02/2025 19:35

I read it a few weeks ago and loved it. It was a solid 5 🌟 read for me, unlikely to be beaten to top book of my reading year by anything else.

everywhichway · 25/02/2025 19:45

Read it a few weeks back. Wonderful, uplifting book!

MrsHaroldRobbins · 25/02/2025 19:54

I got a copy of this for Christmas, looking forward to reading it now.

Carriemac · 25/02/2025 20:01

It's a lovely read

FizzingAda · 26/02/2025 16:27

I loved how it changed her character and perceptions of her own place in nature.

It's on my TBR pile. I'm a bit obsessed with hares.

Misknit · 26/02/2025 20:33

I plan to read it as it has been longlisted for the Women's Prize for fiction. Waiting for a library hold.

Another hare obsessive here.
Loved this on audible. Now I’m intrigued about the illustrations in the hard back!

DrivingThePlot · 19/03/2025 15:44

I began following Chloe Dalton on Instagram whist I was reading it. She's put a lot of her photos of the hare on there. I love hares, they're so beautiful. I'm also a bit a lot hare obsessed.

FizzingAda · 19/03/2025 19:24

Me too! I draw and paint them a lot, have stitched a hare wall hanging, and have hare jewellery, plus a few books about hares. Beautiful mysterious creatures,.
Monkeytennis, the drawings in the book are exquisite.

I haven’t googled it yet but is there a word for a hare-obsessive?
The most annoying thing is when friends buy me an ornament, painting, cup etc with a …………rabbit involved!! Ahhh!!!
Hares are NOT the same as rabbits !!!

TonTonMacoute · 20/03/2025 09:39

That drives me mad! They are remarkably unlike rabbits. When you see them in a field you're more likely to think they're a dog than a rabbit.

MonkeyTennis34 · 20/03/2025 15:46

I haven’t been lucky enough to see a hare in the wild yet.
It’s something I would LOVE to see but will probably never happen.

This is a good time of year to see them as they are getting frisky - March hares?! If you’ve can find out where in your area you might have a chance, early morning, and evening is a good time.

I’m reading it at the moment. Reminded me a bit of The Salt Path.

MonkeyTennis34 · 20/03/2025 19:04

Thanks @FizzingAda
I’ll try and find out if there are any good hare-watching areas.

TonTonMacoute · 20/03/2025 22:37

They like quite open farmland, especially arable. I've seen them on Salisbury Plain, if you're anywhere near there.

We live rurally, DH often sees them when he is out cycling.

MonkeyTennis34 · 21/03/2025 07:28

We’re in the South East @TonTonMacoutebut anywhere near any rural areas.
We’re going to Suffolk in August…I’ll look into it!

babasaclover · 21/03/2025 08:21

This is such a great friend thank you. The book looks magical. I’m going to buy it for my mum and my mother-in-law and who knows maybe even myself!

FizzingAda · 21/03/2025 08:55

On Springwatch in the last few years they have been at place in Sussex (I think), can't remember the name. It's a big farm or estate near the coast where they have rewilded a large portion of it. They had nighttime cameras on some of the fields and it was alive with hares, dozens of them. Don't know if they do visitors but it might be worth a search if you are down that way.

Thank you @FizzingAda
I haven’t watched Spring/Autumnwatch in such a long time. Netflix, Apple etc takes over.
A lovely series..I’ll look it up.

DuckonaBike · 21/03/2025 14:48

I loved this as well. It really made me think about our relationship with nature, and the descriptions are so beautiful. Definitely worth reading in hard copy for the illustrations too.

Sounds like the Knepp estate. You can visit, I've heard it's amazing.
