I have a book token left over from Xmas and normally read thrillers though lately I’ve dabbled in chick lit, but I’d like to read a good thriller again.

I got sick of thrillers because they just got so ridiculous and I’m sick of the twists being bonkers like “It turns out his wife was actually the cat”

Thrillers I enjoyed were things like The Last Thing to Burn by Will Dean, Lisa Jewell’s The Family Upstairs and BA Paris Behind Closed Doors. Creep thrillers!

Any recommendations please?

Shari Lapena, Peter Robinson and Mark Billingham are good as well.

@GrapefruitFrog
I do know what you mean like one of those horror films where you think why are you going into the basement??!!! Surely you know nothing good can come of it!
But what I liked was the element of doubt throughout.
I won't say more in case anyone else does want to read it but I did enjoy it
I'll try your recommendation though.

I've just finished My Perfect Daughter by Sarah Denzil, which I found enjoyable and absorbing.

BuzzieLittleBee · 29/01/2025 11:58

Snare. It's by an Icelandic author. It's based in Iceland and had a brilliant twist.

It's the first in a trilogy, so if you like it, you can carry on the story.

It is quite short too, which I liked! (in a good way, not because it was over quicker)

Have a look at Martina Cole

MayfairRose · 29/01/2025 16:41

Also Arnaldur Indriðason and Jar City

None of this is true by Lisa Jewell. Mentioned up thread.

Alex by Pierre Lemaitre. I read it after it was in the Sunday Times list of the best 100 crime novels of all time. It's totally gripping but quite shocking.

I've almost finished 'Good cop, bad cop' by Simon Kernick. I have lost the reading habit, and really struggled to get back into it. Was an avid reader back in the day. Loved this book, was actually making the effort to sit down with a cuppa to read it this week. Really well written, excellent plot, it felt like a real treat, and I've stayed up late to read it! It's really reignited my love of a good pacy thriller.

I love all of Eve Chase’s novels, they have twists annd are beautifully written.
John Marrs “What Lies Between Is” is excellent.
I also enjoy a Harlan Coben.
Alice Feeny is entertaining.

I do read Frieda McFadden every so often. I was reading one a day on holiday and my family were entertained with the totally ridiculous story lines. I gave them a daily rundown over our evening meal.

Edited

I'm intrigued by the Eve chase novels, never heard of them! which one would you recommend i start with?

Pallisers · 01/02/2025 17:20

Exit by Belinda Bauer is excellent.

Phase2 · 01/02/2025 17:24

It’s so personal isn’t it? I came to recommend a couple but I find Lisa Jewell books so boring and unrealistic that I doubt my recommendations would appeal! I think my absolute favourite is that cross between creepy thriller/creepy ghost without the slasher element (I know LJ isn’t slasher, just the type of thing I try to find). Early Sophie Hannah and Shari Lapena are good for thrillers/mysteries? The Girl on the Landing by Paul Torday was too scary to read alone at times!

CandyCane457 · 01/02/2025 17:28

Sophie Hannah’s “Culver Valley” books are the absolute best for me, so well written and with incredible twists that aren’t cheesy or predictable.

Try Sharon Bolton, most of her books are brilliant. Fantastic atmosphere. Try "Now you see me" or Awakening". One with a good twist as well as humour and menace is "Dead woman walking".

Maboscelar · 01/02/2025 17:42

Try Alex Marwood. Her books are brilliant and well researched.

Harlan Coben has some great books but many more where they just become so ludicrous they’re shit.

MayfairRose · 01/02/2025 17:53

@Phase2 It's so personal you're right.

I picked up None of This is True but compared to her earlier works (warmth, messy, slice of life) I just found it bleak, cynical and lacking something special her earlier books had.

I'm also keen to find a good paranormal book without scientific explanation what's going on.

Bologneselove · 01/02/2025 18:28

I like many books by authors mentioned. K l slater’s books are very good. I’ve enjoyed them all.

Sophie Hannah’s twists are indeed incredible, in that they stretch credulity. She’s an excellent writer, though. Just the plots can be… yikes.

Would recommend Gillian McAllister, as others have.

Oh yes. I recently read Sharon Bolton's Pact. Very good.

Try Janice Hallett. Marvellously twisty and very interesting format.

TinyMouseTheatre · 01/02/2025 20:07

I've just finished The Midnight Hour by Eve Chase and definitely didn't spot a couple of things coming up in the poor and not because they would have been ludicrous.

lilytuckerpritchet · 01/02/2025 20:38

Love Mark Edwards and Ruth Ware

CatamaranViper · 01/02/2025 20:40

JD Kirk.
He's even referenced Mumsnet in his books which makes me suspicious he's actually on here looking for inspo
