I've now read To the Lighthouse and hated it, and just finished Mrs. Dalloway which was almost as awful for me. I figure I can stop now.

I can appreciate an occasional clever description. I can appreciate an occasional elegant sentence. I can appreciate her conveying the ephemeral flitting of people's thoughts. But I can't find anything interesting or entertaining in there.

For me, it's the structure, the way the action is set during one day, the imagery (the strikes of Big Ben dissolving like circular ripples in the air), the elegance, the links between the soldier's story and Mrs Dalloway 's, the description of London.

I laughed so much I had to pull in to a lay-by when I was listening to it in the car one time. It was the way Alison Steadman, as Ginny Fox, said 'women's lavatories' - utterly hilarious.

Not a huge fan of VW although I'm trying to read more 'chewy' stuff to keep my brain in good order.
