I ❤️ these book but have sadly read them all now. I would like to recommend one to a friend who hasn't read them.
Unfortunately they're all in a mush in my brain and, while I now some are better than others, I can't remember particular ones.
I suppose I could suggest starting with the 1st one, but I don't think it was one of the best.
Fwiw, I do think the ones where reacher is referred to in the 3rd person singular are better, and I am not keen on the ones where he's joined by previous army friends.

My favourite is the second one, Die Trying and I'm gutted they're not filming that one.
I think the first one is a good place to start, especially if they're intending to watch the TV series at some point.

I would recommend reading them in order too. I wouldn't recommend the later ones though, they're not as good as they used to be.

I like the ones that take him back to being younger, but I think One Shot is probably a good one to recommend. Not a fan of the first one, not a fan of the recent ones with his brother.

61 hours is the best, I was in tears at the end of that one.

I'm currently reading In Too Deep and it's awful so far and I'm really disappointed. This will definitely be the last one I buy.

Sausagenbacon · 27/01/2025 10:15

Is that one of the later ones?

61 Hours is book 14.

In Too Deep is the latest which Lee Childs has co-written with his brother, Andrew Childs

I don't know why he's doing the brother thing. He must be richer than Croesus by now and he's just trashing his reputation.

Sausagenbacon · 27/01/2025 13:06

Yes, I must admit I don't read the one's with his brother.

The books have definitely gone down hill quality wise since his brother started co-writing. I'm not even sure why they started doing it.

I actually still think the first is one of the best it certainly has a clever plot, I have a signed paperback first edition as he was still becoming famous and his agent brought him to our bookshop for a signing!

The first one (Killing Floor) is brilliant. Sadly I can't remember which ones I like after that! I think I have read nearly all of them though.

Anyone else here a fan of John Sandford? Detective Lucas Davenport. Dozens of books.

I love the early Reacher books - my son and I have set ourselves a challenge of getting every one in the series but we aren't allowed to buy new or online so have to check out the charity shops and book sales when we can! We have 5 left to get, one of which is TripWire which he is very eager to read Grin.

I read Echo Burning about 20 years ago after picking it up from a free book shelf at a hostel. It wasn't even remotely my genre but I really enjoyed it.

My DH decided to read a book on holiday last month. We've been together for nearly a decade and he's never read a book (yes, it's strange to me too) but I suggested he start with the only Lee Child book in their free library. He got through it in 2 days then quickly went hunting around all the mini libraries for the next one. That one was 61 hours.

I think it's important ish to read the first one as it gives the back story about the brother. After they they are interchangeable imo. I love them, but they are all much the same and I can barely distinguish between them now.

SpottyBumPony · 05/02/2025 13:45

There's one who's name I have forgotten. Reacher stays at a motel where people are staying a few days before they go to a farm to commit suicide. Obviously it doesn't go to plan for them.

Anybody know what it's called?

Make Me.
(this is a reply to the one above)

I’ve read them all. I would recommend starting with the first and reading them in order. The earlier ones are the best.
