Which Kindle should I buy?

Putting this in here for the traffic. Have decided I want to buy a Kindle but have no idea which type to get, so looking for your advice, Kindle users. I did used to have a Nook until they went obsolete so I have used this sort of device before.

I have a paperwhite. It's backlit so you don't need a light on to read at night.

Sirzy · 11/01/2025 12:30

I have recently got one and went for the paperwhite. For me it was the slightly bigger size which made the difference.

K0OLA1D · 11/01/2025 12:36

I have the max 11 fire and I love it. The battery lasts ages and I use it to watch Netflix etc in bed or when away when needed as well

I don't have any social media apps or emails on there so no distractions.

NannyR · 11/01/2025 12:44

If you are wanting an e-book, I would go for the basic or the paperwhite. I wouldn't get a Fire if it's primarily for reading - you may as well read on your phone using the kindle app.

iamnotalemon · 11/01/2025 13:20

I have a paperwhite and love it. It's one of my prized possessions 😂

toastofthetown · 11/01/2025 13:21

I'd be wary with the new Paperwhites (12th Generation), because there have been numerous reports of yellow banding on the screen. This also affected the new Colorsoft but I believe the issue has been fixed, but there's still the risk of having old stock shipped. Amazon have a good returns policy though, so if you do have a faulty product, it should be easy to return.

  • All new Kindles have lighting built in, the same screen resolution and USB-C charging. The basic Kindle is the smallest (6 inch), which isn't necessarily a drawback if portability is important to you. My beloved 2011 Kindle is a six inch screen and personally that's the perfect size for me because I can take it anywhere.
  • Next level up, the Paperwhite has a 7 inch screen, the option to change the tone of the lighting from cool to warm and is waterproof.
  • The Paperwhite SE also has automatically adjusting lighting and the ability for wireless charging.
  • Then the Colorsoft has a colour screen, but nothing else the SE doesn't have. Probably not important unless you're reading graphic novel or comics, because most books are black and white other than covers anyway.
  • Then the Scribe is larger again (10 inches) and as the name suggest you can write on it. It doesn't have wireless charging.

The other spanner in the works is also considering a Kobo. I'm fully tied into Kindle now, but Kobo has just as large a library (unless you're interested in something like Kindle Unlimited which does have many exclusives, but I'm not), you actually own your books unlike Amazon where if they close your account you lose your library, and the ability to rent library books which isn't possible on Kindle UK. I've never used a Kobo though, so don't know how the UI compares.

Edit: I also wouldn't get a Fire tablet for reading. The beauty of a kindle for me is that it's not a backlit screen and is a dedicated device for reading on without distractions. I use the Kindle app on my phone if I don't have my Kindle with me, but for me the experience is nowhere near as good.

No33 · 11/01/2025 13:22

I agree with others. The paper white.

Don't get a fire, that's a tablet, you may as well use the tech you already have if you get one of these.

You can borrow books from the library using Libby I think. I've never bothered, because it is a little convoluted, but it can be done with a pc and a wire!

EskSmith · 11/01/2025 13:28

I agree with the others. Don't get a tablet, the usp of a kindle is that it isn't like reading a screen.
I've read ebooks since I started on my palm & the best by far is my current oasis which sadly has
a rapidly failing (battery). I love it & have no idea what yo replace it with. I've looked at the scribe but I think it's going to be too big to read on, and possibly too heavy so I'm probably going to go with the paper white - I'm not sure colour would enhance my reading experience. What I'm really really going to miss is physical page turn buttons.
Like toastofthetown I'm pretty tied into the Amazon ecosystem but if you are just starting out some of the others might be worth a look.

I feel you with the attachment to page turn buttons! No feature Amazon has replaced them with is better for me.

I have Paperwhite, reasonably old version as I picked it for being able to read in the dark. Now that the standard kindle also enables that I would probably opt for standard - one inch in screen size is probably fine for me.

Agree with others, I have a Fire that predates my Paperwhite, but it was a gift and other tech does everything better and I wanted it solely for reading.

Is the light level adjustable and can you use it without the back light?

OP posts:
LeylaOfCircassia · 11/01/2025 19:41

It is adjustable and you could turn it down entirely.

Floralnomad · 11/01/2025 19:47

I have a paper white and it’s perfect for reading in bed in the dark and equally good in daylight .

CutFlowers · 11/01/2025 19:54

The 12th gen paperwhite is waterproof so good if you like to read in the bath. I choose it because it was back-lit but the most recent basic kindle is also back-lit (this means you can read in the dark without waking others in the room) and is slightly smaller so would possibly choose that if was choosing again. It is also cheaper.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/01/2025 19:54

Paperwhite hear as well.

PeachPumpkin · 11/01/2025 19:59

The light level is also adjustable on the basic, but it doesn’t have the warm or cool options for lighting.

Trampauline · 11/01/2025 22:44

Lots of you favour the Paperwhite and I think that would suit my needs. I've googled kobo and their ereaders sound equally as good as Kindles. I like that you own your books and can borrow ebooks from public libraries. I'm tempted by kobo but worry it might become obsolete like the Nook did.

A lot of you favour the Paperwhite and it sounds like it would be right for me. I've googled the Kobo and they sound very good as well. I like that you own what you have downloaded and that you can borrow ebooks from libraries. Just not sure I want to take the risk with something that must have a much smaller market than Kindle, in case it goes the way of the Nook.

They might but they've been going for quite a while Wink

scarfaceace · 12/01/2025 12:02

I have a Paperwhite and a Kobo and I love them both, but the Kobo has the edge as I can download library books and I can't do that on the Kindle. My Kindle is a few years old though and maybe the newer versions can download library books?

My Kobo has a touchscreen but also has buttons for turning pages, and you can hold it in any orientation and the page adjusts automatically.

Ignore duplicates. I posted last night and still hadn't appeared on here by this morning and this mornings have had a massive delay appearing on here.
