What are your reading plans for the year?

I usually read >52 books per year, but I didn't quite make it this year. It's a bit dis-heartening, but I don't really want to feel negative about not reading enough, so I'd like to change my plan this year.

I wondered about >12 fiction, and >12 non-fiction, but I'm not sure. Or I could just track what I read without a particular target.

What do other people do?

I had an aim for 40 last year and smashed it with 165. I'm going for 52 this year. I always aim for lower than I think I'll do because like you say it's disheartening to not meet your goal and if you set it low then you know you'll make it

SporesMouldsAndFungus · 04/01/2025 12:01

Wow, 165 🫨, that's amazing. I got to 42 this year.

I've been doing this for a good few years now, so I feel like it's time to shake things up a bit.

The problem is I'm such a control freak 😄 - maybe I'll just relax and track what I read, but not have a specific goal. I think this could work.

Yeah, just read 'cause you like it. That's what I'm doing. I've decided this is the year of chill.

SporesMouldsAndFungus · 04/01/2025 18:27

Definitely 🙂.

I found out that a new local book shop has a monthly book group, so I think I'm going to go to that. I like that it will make me read some books that I might not otherwise have read.

What? Like 100 pages per book and not remembering what you have read?

DancefloorAcrobatics · 04/01/2025 18:39

PS I have a massive backlog of about 20 books and series that I want to focus on before adding anymore.... that should keep me entertained for a few months.

SporesMouldsAndFungus · 04/01/2025 18:47

I bought the complete works of one of my favourite poets today, so that will keep me busy for a while.

I set my target achievable, because I like to see my Goodreads email at the end of the year with pages read etc. I’m on the 50 books thread where I don’t put my numbers and have a notebook where I’ve numbered since 2013 and another journal where I like to write about what I’m ready and watching.

I found when I set the number too high I was subconsciously picking shorter books rather than what I wanted to read.

To be honest a pp is right, you can just read.

Citygirlrurallife · 04/01/2025 22:56

my aim is to only buy a new book once I’ve read 5 books I already own

i dont have a number to achieve. I read for the joy and escapism and sometimes I have time for that and a good enough book to get up early and stay up late for and sometimes I dont

SporesMouldsAndFungus · 04/01/2025 23:54

Thanks everyone, I'm really enjoying the idea of just reading what I want to when I want to this year 💛.

I don't like to make it all about the numbers either, but I have set more general goals.

Being more consistent with reading habit - I tend to read intensely in phases and then not at all for a while.
I've noticed forcing myself to finish a rubbish book tends to throw me off a consistent reading streak, so I must be more mindful of that.

I'd like to incorporate more non-fiction, broaden my horizons a little, it's never really been my thing but I'd like to be more knowledgeable.

Lastly, I'm going to try to branch out from my comfort zones, choose genres and authors with a bit more diversity.

ChristmasGrinch24 · 05/01/2025 16:06

I hit 70 books last year.

This year it's 25, I'd like to reach 100+ but I read less when the pressure is on lol.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 05/01/2025 18:41

@Polecat07 - if you are looking at non fiction, I can highly recommend
Queen of the Dessert: The extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell by Georgia Howell.

I usually struggle with non fiction/ biographies and have them as audio books. However, I really enjoyed GH' book about G Bell it has a lovely flow to it.

Otherwise, it's got to be quality (= decent enjoyable books) not quantity! I like to savour the time spent with a good book, a bit like a reliable friend I can escape with! Most of mine are 600 pages +, so with a busy life they are with me for a while!

SporesMouldsAndFungus · 05/01/2025 18:57

For non-fiction, I tend to like mindset books, so thinks like:
Indistractable
I can make you rich
Never split the difference

And poetry too, but I suppose that's a different genre.

I used to be 52+ a year but we had a baby and now a night owl toddler who leaves me with little reading time..... I had no does how much I read on my commute and breaks at work- last year I managed 12 partly down to moving and joining the book club to make some friends it definitely got me to read some stuff I wouldn't have even picked up!!

So hoping for a few more this year and to get back into it a bit more consistently as o do really miss it!!
