Post apocalyptic books - recommendations?

Hello everyone. I have read the usual and really like this genre or very though provoking books. Last I read was Children of Time. I liked the concept but the spiders weren’t for me 😂.

Would anyone have any recommendations? Thank you!

I loved the sort-of-sequels to Station Eleven as well (though not so post apocalyptic).

Children of Men (PD James)
John Christopher (Death of grass, The Guardians, Tripods, Pendulum).
Survivors (Terry Deary - much better than the tv series, but the sequels go a bit weird).
Stars Reach (John Michael Greer)
World built by hand (4 books by James Howard Kunstler).

Also seconding previous votes for The Passage trilogy and Silo.

I’ve read Children of Men and really enjoyed (kinda crap movie though) but so many other brilliant recommendations thank you!

Another old one, dated politics but very readable, written at the height of nuclear anxiety: Nevil Shute's On the Beach.

Last One at the Party
The Quiet at the End of the World

A couple more recent ones for you - perhaps not as literary as some suggestions, but both are great reads: Bird Box by Josh Malerman (much better than the film) and The Drift by CJ Tudor.

The Passage series by Justin Cronin is excellent.

Yes, I agree. This was going to be my recommendation too.

I’ve also read How high we go in the dark (good concept, liked it and happy to have read but not sure of the ending), The Wall (liked the concept but not an overly satisfying ending) and Leave the world behind which I found disappointing.

Interesting to consider the divide between post-apocalyptic and sci-fi/ cli-fi

Some rather grim feminist ones
Suzie McKee Charnas Walk to the end of the world & following
Meg Ellison Book of the unnamed midwife
Sherri S Tepper the gate to women’s country

Came on to say the MaddAddam Trilogy too, and see it's already been recommended and that you've already read it. I'm now going to check out the other things you've thumbs-upped, OP, as I'm likely to enjoy those titles too.

Not quite post apocalyptic, and more in a kind of niche mysti-fi genre, is the compelling Canopus in Argos: Archives series by Doris Lessing, which I whole-heartedly recommend.

Irie1980 · 29/12/2024 00:48

Might be a bit close to home but this was a brilliant read, and horrifying.

Here are some not mentioned!

The Grace Year
The Forest of Hands and Teeth
The Girl with all the Gifts
The Gender Games (and the subsequent series)

Agree with the Swan Song and Passage recommendations!
