I want to read a book or three this holiday. I want an easy read, bit of escapism, thrilling, etc. What would you recommend?

How To Sell A Haunted House by Grady Hendrix

Weenurse · 26/12/2024 12:08

The death of Dora Black by Lainie Anderson.
Set in Adelaide, South Australia and loosely based on their first woman police officer.

Radishknot · 26/12/2024 12:24

@teaandtoastwithmarmite looks interesting, it’s not too scary is it? I spook easily!

I’m currently reading Precipice by Robert Harris and really enjoying it. Politics, war and romance.

LarkspurLane · 26/12/2024 12:36

I found Yellowface quite page turny, not the best book ever but totally drew me in.

I agree. I didn’t think I’d like it as it’s not my usual genre but I’m fascinated. True story too!

It was a bit scary tbh but it’s worth it. I was reading some bits with one eye closed 😂

American Dirt by Jeanine Cumins

Under the Skin by Michel Faber.

Completely unlike the (awful) film, and stays with you a long time. It's brilliant.

I just finished Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson and immediately bought the sequel. Lots of fun and very page turny.

Try Canal Pushers by Andy Griffee - first in a new series where the hero lives on a houseboat in variously Birmingham, Bristol, Oxford etc - good writing, interesting and a notch above comfy crime.

I recently read Here One Moment by Lianne Moriarty. That was one of those books where I read it every free moment that I had and missed the characters once it ended.

leafybrew · 03/01/2025 08:25

Wanted to add to the list - Wrong Place, Wrong time by Gillian McAllistair.

The premis of the book is going back in time (not usually something I'd like) but she writes it very well. No 'padding' out and found the ending satisfactory too!

Read it in just under 3 days..

I listened to that on BBC sounds and wasn't that taken with it. Still listened to it all though Wink

I've recommended Miss Benson's Beetle by Rachel Joyce on a couple of threads this week but it really is good and you definitely want to find out what happens.

AlertCat · 04/01/2025 20:45

I read the Strike series (JK Rowling writing as Robert Galbraith) one after the other last year, they were great. Really drew me in.

@crosstalk i will try that Canal Pushers book, sounds right up my street and I live in an area with a lot of canal dwellers! Thanks.

TinyMouseTheatre · 05/01/2025 07:12

I've just started reading Thr Midnight Hour by Eve Chase which I think would got your requirements too @Radishknot Wink

NotMilanese · 15/01/2025 06:57

@TinyMouseTheatre Just read The Midnight Hour on your recommendation and I really enjoyed it, thank you!
I also enjoyed How to Sell a Haunted House, @teaandtoastwithmarmite. My recommendation would be I Am Pilgrim (bit gory, though) or the Orphan X books. Have purchased two other books from this thread!
