A Christmas Carol

Thought I'd read this as I've just watched the Alastair Sim version of a Christmas Carol on the TV.

Started the book today (I have an old copy - maybe 1930s - with a Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol and a few other Dickens' short stories).

A Christmas Carol is a pretty short story - and it's truly brilliant.

It's a wonderful book and even better read aloud. One of my favourites!

If you like Charles Dickens, then also try George Gissing who was Dickens' contemporary - his books are brilliant. (I'd recommend'New Grub Street' and 'The Nether World.)

I love it! Dickens was a terrible waffler but this one is beautifully short.

I read it every year. My absolute favourite.

I reread A Christmas Carol most years - love it! Dickens wrote other Christmas stories too but this is far and away the best.

It's funny, but every time I pick up Dickens I have my doubts – you know, too mawkish and too waffly. And yet each time I'm hooked all over again. For all his faults, he's just such a good storyteller. He's one of those writers (I guess Jane Austen, P. G. Wodehouse, Thomas Hardy, and Conan Doyle would be other examples) who created a world. And when you read him, you have to suspend disbelief and abide by the rules of his world.

It's a wonderful story. For those who need or prefer audiobooks, Hugh Grant narrates it rather well.
