I use a Kindle due to my eyesight and have read and re-read everything on there so looking for new things to read.

I like detective/crime books but only set in the UK or Australia
I don't like "cosy" fiction or chicklit
I've tried Richard Coles first book expecting to enjoy it but it was too wordy
Ditto with anything by JK Rowling'Robert Galbraith

Sorry I sound so fussy!

I take it you’ve worked your way through Agatha Christie and Father Brown?

RaraRachael · 24/12/2024 11:41

I don't particularly like fiction set in the past either - sorry!

Have you tried either Jane harper or Lucy Clarke ( she sets hers in either uk or new Zealand)

ÚlldemoShúl · 24/12/2024 11:50

All of the ones below are police procedurals/ detective fiction
UK
Jane Casey- DI Maeve Kerrigan
William Shaw- DS Alexandra Cupidi
Stephen Booth- set in Notts/ Derbyshire- can’t remember detectives names
Kate Rhodes- Ben Kitto
I’m guessing you’ve already done the well known ones like Ian Rankin’s Rebus or Reginald Hill’s Dalziel and Pascoe

Australia
Jane Harper
Chris Hammer- Ivan Lucic series is best
Dinuka McKenzie- first book is The Torrent
Margaret Hickey- first book is Stone Town- not sure if available in UK
Garry Disher- has tons of books- I like the series starting with Bitterwash Road best

How can you have read and reread everything on kindle??

Tortielady · 24/12/2024 12:05

James Oswald's DI Tony McClane series set in Edinburgh
Val McDermid's Karen Pirie series - sometimes Edinburgh, but she takes you into a wider Scotland setting too
Peter James - Det Superintendent Roy Grace set in Brighton
Susan Hill - DCI Simon Serrailler series, set in an English Cathredral town.
Peter Temple - stand-alone novels set in Australia

Viviennemary · 24/12/2024 12:07

I like Peter James and Robert Goddard,

fruitpastille · 24/12/2024 12:16

Do you like suspense/psychological thrillers?
Lisa Jewell is quite an easy read. There are lots more in that genre.
Have you read all the Richard Osman books? Maybe too 'cosy'. The newer one has more action - The bullet that missed.

Xiaoxiong · 24/12/2024 12:18

Do you like spy/espionage stuff? John le Carre, Mick Herron's Slough house books, etc?

How about non-fiction true crime?

fruitpastille · 24/12/2024 12:20

Also an Australian author - Liane Moriaty, Big Little Lies. She's written others too.

What does Amazon recommend, based on your previous purchases?

hopeishere · 24/12/2024 13:41

You can buy new books for kindle.

Xiaoxiong · 24/12/2024 13:51

I think the OP is asking for recommendations on what to buy next to restock her kindle as she's read everything she's already got.

How about the Secret History by Donna Tartt?

hopeishere · 24/12/2024 14:22

Sorry the way it was worded was confusing me!

Second Liane Moriarty. Richard Osmond I've enjoyed. Also None of this is True.

Yes that's exactly what I mean - sorry I didn't think my query was difficult to understand - I knew what I meant!

I'm not keen on spy/espionage stuff. I'm not thick but I find that sort of stuff quite hard to understand.
I do like a psychological thriller as long as it has a decent ending - not the sort that go off into the realms of supernatural.

Anthony Horowitz books, both the Magpie Murders and the Hawthorn ones are good.

highlandcoo · 24/12/2024 19:09

I discovered Karen Campbell as the author of Paper Cup, an excellent mainstream novel tellng the story of a young woman living with alcoholism, and a journey she feels she has to make back to her home town in SW Scotland after a long absence. Anyway .. I then discovered that Karen Campbell started out as a crime writer (she was also a police officer in an earlier career) and has written four police procedural books starting with The Twilight Time which are worth a read.
I thoroughly recommend Paper Cup and This Is Where I Am too. They are nothing like cosy crime or chick lit.

maximist · 24/12/2024 19:19

You might like the British Library Crime Classics - they're mostly on kindle unlimited, so you can read as many as you want for less than £10 per month. I particularly enjoy ECR Lorac/Carol Carnac from that series.

Thanks for all the suggestions- plenty for me to research over the holidays.
