If my DS liked the Thursday Murder Club series...

What else might he like?

DS has ASD, is 15 and is not a reader. Somehow we struck gold with the Richard Osman books, but now I'm wondering where to go next.

I think he also liked the fact that he "knows" Richard Osman from House of Games, so another famous/recognisable author might help.

Any suggestions welcome!

He's too young now, but when he's older he might like the Cormoran Strike books my Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling, as she's so well known) and they're a good read.

Thanks. What age would these be suitable for?

Dc is also 15 and loved those also has enjoyed The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood. Also Agatha Christie.

Amazing, thanks! I'll check those out!

Why is 15 too young?

yeesh · 14/12/2024 20:33

Has he read the new Richard osmond? He has the first book in a new series out, I think it’s called ‘we solve’ murders.

Yes, he has. And he enjoyed that too!

He might like Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie books.

biscuitcat · 14/12/2024 20:38

I don't know that 15 is too young for the Strike books - some are a bit gruesome but they're really good stories!

Has he read the Anthony Horowitz 'Hawthorne' series? And actually, his Sherlock Holmes ones and Magpie Murders/Moonflower Murders are good too.

CrossPurposes · 14/12/2024 20:45

I suggest the Hawthorne and Horowitz series by Anthony Horowitz. They feature "Anthony Horowitz" and the murders he gets involved in which are solved by Hawthorne. They are funny and not at all violent.

15 isn’t too young at all.

What about the Harlan Corben books? Try his big best sellers first - they really are un-put-downable.

The Rev Richard Coles books are in a similar vein, I think

Comefromaway · 14/12/2024 20:49

The original books from the Murder in Paradise series by Robert Thoroughgood. My Ds liked those as a teen

PandaG · 14/12/2024 20:51

I think 15 would be OK for Strike. Agree with Agatha Christie... Could you watch say Murder on the Orient Express (Branagh version) before giving him some of the books?

Dappy777 · 14/12/2024 20:52

If he likes crime books, how about the Sherlock Holmes short stories. I'd really recommend listening to Stephen Fry reading them. Agatha Christie is also wonderful. These people have stood the test of time for a reason.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/12/2024 20:55

Richard Osman recently endorsed The Kellerby Code by Jonny Sweet, he's quoted on the cover.

He also recommended Nevil Shute's Trustee From The Toolroom on Between The Covers

They are, but not as well written imo. I quite like them, but prefer Osman.

What about 'A Good Girl's Guide to Murder'. Could watch the TV adaptation of the first one in the series (pretty sure it's OK for a 15 yo) then read the others in the series.

softkitty79 · 14/12/2024 20:55

Ian Moore, Follet Valley Mysteries
Robert Thoroughgood, Marlow Murder Club

StrangeSenseOfCalm · 14/12/2024 21:03

Thank you for all of these suggestions!

I've read a lot of Harlen Coben books myself and really like them. I'll see if I can find one of the ones I've read and try him with that.

Funnily enough I googled the same thing for myself and went with Horowitz/Hawthorne. I'm quite fussy and am so enjoying the first.

seven201 · 14/12/2024 21:26

I'm clearly very wrong about the Strike Books and age. I guess I was thinking of the one where the writers body is cut open as I was a bit of a wimp about that one! This has made me want to re-listen to them.

SilverShadowNight · 14/12/2024 21:41

I would recommend the Hawthorne/Horowitz books too.

I was also going to recommend the Marlow Murder Club books (I think there are two or three now). And if being 'famous' helps, Robert Thorogood is the creator and screenwriter for the Death in Paradise TV series and spin-offs
