Just listened to Meryl Streep do Tom Lake and she is amazing. Who do you like?

Alex Jennings - he did The Fury, which i didn't much like, but tolerated because of his narration, and Shrines of Gaiety, which really suited him.

Reetpetitenot · 16/12/2024 06:06

Hattie Morahan has a beautiful reading style and I loved Fenella Woolgar reading Kate Atkinson's Life After Life.

I heard a version with Jason Watkins reading which was excellent.

Listening to A Christmas Carol/ Hugh Grant. Lovely 🥰

I like Graham Norton doing his own books. Like the Strike novels tho his Glaswegian accent is appalling.

And I absolutely can't get on with Stephen Fry reading any adult books (as opposed to HP). He seems somehow to emphasise every syllable of every word and it drives me mad.

GameofPhones · 16/12/2024 17:17

Timothy West, reading both non-fiction and fiction. Perfect.

My idea of heaven is laying in a hot bath listening to Stephen Fry read Sherlock Holmes or P. G. Wodehouse. I wish he'd record Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray as well.

The best audiobook recording I have ever heard is Michael Maloney reading Evelyn Waugh's Decline and Fall. I also remember listening to a brilliant reading of Aldous Huxley's Chrome Yellow, but I can't remember who it was.

Oh, and Mark Gatiss reading M. R. James (perfect for Christmas).

Michael Maloney was brilliant! His Brazilian brothel keeper voice was the best

I've been listening to Stephen Fry reading PG Wodehouse short stories. He does different voices wonderfully - very funny. I listen to it to go to sleep and only get around five minutes in before I drift off.

He was brilliant reading the Harry Potter books

Debtfreeme · 20/12/2024 19:38

Angus King reading Jack Logan

Agreed. And his son is absolutely superb too.

I used to love Alex Jennings but I gradually tired of his narration because it seemed that every sentence had the same, predictable intonation and I couldn’t listen anymore

Bollingerknickers · 26/12/2024 12:16

Leighton Pugh reading The Ashes of London series is fantastic

BettyBardMacDonald · 26/12/2024 12:27

Philip Bretherton (Alistair from ATGB) reads a series of Golden Age detective anthologies called Bodies from the Library. He's quite talented at the voices and narration.

FortunaMajor · 26/12/2024 13:09

I am a prolific listener and really rate Simon Vance. I actively seek out books he's narrated. He's very easy on the ears.

BettyBardMacDonald · 26/12/2024 13:28

Imogen Church is good if you like a dramatic style. She does quite a few of the "girl on a train" type books.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 26/12/2024 14:27

I really rate Scott Brick and Simon Vance

Nicola Walker

The guy that did Project Hail Mary

The Sandman series is all big names

The Rutshire Chronicles

Where is everyone finding these audiobooks? Audible?

See if your local library has a digital service. It will be free. They will most likely be using Borrowbox or Libby. Sign up online and you should get immediate access. Services around the country differ, but mine has an excellent selection.

You'll have to wait your turn for popular titles, but they often come around a lot faster than the app says. If users return items as soon as they finish rather than leaving them to auto expire then the wait time shortens for everyone.

Theoldbird · 26/12/2024 22:59

Thanks @FortunaMajor , that's really helpful. I actually have the app, recently downloaded and still getting used to navigating my way round it.

My recommendation is the PG Wodehouse series read by Jonathan Cecil. Absolutely superb and such nuanced delivery.

MaryJay · 26/12/2024 23:13

Another fan of Samuel West. He reads the Morse books.

Confundo · 31/12/2024 12:17

Coming to this late, but agree with all the Juliet Stevenson recommendations. Anna Massey also good.
Dominic West reading the Remains of the Day still stands out as a masterpiece. I also liked Jeremy Irons reading Brideshead Revisited, Chiwetel Ejiofor reading Piranesi, and Michael Sheen for The Secret Commonwealth or La Belle Sauvage.
