Hi my son loved the Skulduggery Pleasant and the How to Train your Dragon series. He also enjoyed Hunger Games and some of Artemis Fowl. He enjoys lighter dystopian / fantasy but it's really key for them to be funny and easy to read - wasn't keen on trying the Divergent series. Any recommendations?

I’m a 50 year old book nerd that often reads skullduggery and Percy Jackson etc for the escapism after days of writing reports and audits and reading white papers. They are all fabulous!

what about the Kane Chronicles by Rick riordan ir anything by Philip Pullman.

I enjoyed Dean Koontz and I’m sure he did some children’s books.

Terry Pritchett did some fabulous books for younger readers. Wee Free Men makes me chortle still when rereading it.

Any of Rick Riordan's books, I bought them for DD but read them myself they are brilliantly written.

Maze runner tends to be a hit with that age group and not as long as the Divergent Series as does Alex Rider.

Cressida Cowell also has the Magic Once series that he might like.

The Unfortunate Events series is also great - there are lots of them but most libraries would have them. Similarly the Benedict Society - both have accompanying TV series / films too.

Thanks all, great ideas!

Patrick Ness's Chaos Walking Trilogy, starting with the Knife of Never Letting Go. I'd say he's quite easy to read, insofar as he's hard to put down. He's a high-stakes writer who knows how to give his characters a hard time without going over the top.

The same for Darren Shan - Demontata Series. He piles on the peril, the moral dilemmas, the emotional import and finishes it off with tons of gore. . .enough probably, for a twelve year old. Too much, perhaps, for many grown-ups! Again, lots of high stakes, some of it literally apocalyptic.
