If my daughter is loving Klara and the Sun

What else might she enjoy? She’s a very good reader but easily bored. She does very well in her English lessons but I’ve been sad to see her lose her love of reading this year (13 and has a phone). I’ve tried so many books, but mostly she isn’t interested.

Klara and the sun is brilliant; I loved it myself. What else is clearly written like that and gripping?

Has she read Never Let Me Go by the same author? There’s lots of dystopian science fiction but these are particularly well written. Maybe some Margaret Atwood? The Oryx and Crake trilogy perhaps.

FumingTRex · 06/12/2024 22:10

The Handmaids Tale. Remains of the Day. I think Never Let me Go might be a bit heavy at 13.

Good ideas! Thank you.

I loved Oryx and Crake, I’ll get a new copy. Didn’t realise there were others.

And Remains of the day - isn’t it a bit slow? I’ve never read it though.

I assumed The Handmaids Tale might be too old for her. I’ll have a read again.

thank you so much for thoughtful replies!

Its a while since I read it so not 100% sure on age suitability but The Circle by Dave Eggers - dystopian novel set in a tech company.
Or general science fiction that I’ve enjoyed (as a normally non science fiction reader so accessible) - Ender’s Game

I remember loving Mary Wesley’s YA books at that age. The sixth seal in particular is fairly dystopian.

Also Diana Wynn Jones - Fire & Hemlock perhaps?
I think remains of the day might be a bit slow for that age. Never let me go is better probably.

Definitely Handmaids tale. I read it at the same age and loved it. It’s still my favourite ever book now. Yes the themes are heavy but 13/14 is about the right age for it.

The Power by Naomi someone (sorry I can’t remember the whole name) is also very similar and very good.

Then you have the whole Gone series if that’s any good… my dd really enjoyed that around the same age.

Klara and the Sun was excellent.

My son and I both loved a book called A Single Stone, the author is called Meg McKinley I think.

Isn't oryx and crake the one with the genetically modified people that are 'blue' when they have sex? It might be a little much for 13 years old

Deathraystare · 19/12/2024 09:35

Oooh I hope she can put down her phone for 5 minutes and enjoy reading again. I also loved Klara and the Sun and enjoyed most of the books recommended in this post.

It's funny that the take-away for most people is to suggest more dystopian fiction. I don't even know if the daughter will love it so much when she gets to the ending.
Am I think only one who thinks it's possible that maybe the daughter just likes the glimpse of a future, or the simplicity of the language?

fruitpastille · 20/12/2024 07:02

I've recent discovered this author for myself and would say Never Let Me Go has a much more similar style than Remains of the Day. The sightly naive female voice and the gradual reveal of the world she lives in. The simplicity of the language is brilliant.

The Handmaid's Tale is a good idea but I'm not sure if I would want my 13 year old to read it.
