Books like Mrs Pepperpot

DD 10 is a relatively reluctant but competent reader. She's recently been enjoying a Mrs Pepperpot book. I think part of the appeal is that it's more a collection of short but connected stories so she isn't put off by the thought of reading a whole book. Any suggestions of similar style books would be much appreciated!!

Gosh Mrs Pepperpot, that brings back memories.

What about Mallory Towers?

CocoPlum · 04/12/2024 10:28

How about Princess MirrorBelle? Similar in that it is connected stories but like a chapter book.

I was reading DD Mrs Pepperpot, she was given a copy about 10 years ago (not an old version) and it had Mrs P rubbing yellow chalk on her face to signal to the little girl that the answer she was looking for was China! I think we quietly shelved the book after that.

The Worst Witch books are lovely for that age group.

Darkdarkdeeds · 04/12/2024 18:01

Oh my goodness cocoplum, I haven't spotted anything like that yet but she's mainly been reading it to herself. I've not heard of princess mirror belle, thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you to everyone else for your suggestions too. I'd totally forgotten that we had a set of mallory towers books that my older sister had passed on to us a while back.

Youngest DD liked the worst witch books but eldest was never that keen unfortunately.

Pippin Longstocking?

adulthoodisajoke · 04/12/2024 18:21

Enid Blyton did a collection of short stories called the adventures of pip
I loved Willow Farm by Enid Blyton, the famous five, naughtiest girl, the caravan family
rainbow fairies - lots of them and all fairly short

hanahsaunt · 04/12/2024 18:23

Second for Pippi Longstocking!

Gorgonemilezola · 04/12/2024 18:29

Also Shirley Hughes, Judith Kerr, the Katie Morag stories.

I loved Laura Ingalls Wilder, Heidi, the Katie books and Anne of Green Gables before I was 10. I don't know if they'd be a bit old fashioned now.

LoveIndubitably · 04/12/2024 18:34

Ursula Bear by Shiela Lavelle, and My Naughty Little Sister.
Mary Mary by Joan G Robinson.

All books I enjoyed at that age, might be a bit old-fashioned but that's part of the charm!

FinnJuhl · 04/12/2024 18:39

When I think of Mrs Pepperpot, the Teddy Robinson books come immediately to mind. I must have read them at about the same age. The stories are short, funny and charming - the illustrations are sweet as well. I bought a copy for my DC and they enjoyed them.

Gorgonemilezola · 04/12/2024 18:40

Ohhhh, Teddy Robinson. I remember going to the library with my Mum and always getting at least one Teddy Robinson book. 😭

MrsSethGecko · 04/12/2024 18:42

My Naughty Little Sister? I loved those.

mrpinkwhistlescat · 04/12/2024 19:04

What a lovely thread for bringing back childhood memories, eg the infants' school teacher reading Teddy Robinson books to us as we sat by the coal fire in our classroom ( I'm 60).
I'm making a note of these books, to buy for my young grandson.
Hope you find something that your DD will love, OP.

MrsSethGecko · 04/12/2024 19:12

Alison Uttley, Magic in My Pocket. Just came back to me!

Sunnnybunny72 · 04/12/2024 19:13

How about The Wishing Chair. Wow, brings back memories.

Scutterbug · 04/12/2024 19:15

Oh I loved those books! And Milly Molly Mandy!

Despite all the noise about Enid Blyton being updated for modern sensibilities apparently it's still fine to have a character called Chinky. So much as I loved the stories I wouldn't go there.

I was going to say Milly Molly Mandy! That takes me back Smile

muminherts · 04/12/2024 19:25

My kids loved mrs pepperpot, Carlson on the roof, pippi longstocking.

they also adored Brambley Hedge at about the same age

GreebosABigSoftyReally · 04/12/2024 19:26

Moomins? And yes Milly Molly Mandy, and Anne of GG, maybe also Just William?

Cat5689 · 04/12/2024 19:27

Tilly Mint Tales

Darkdarkdeeds · 04/12/2024 23:35

Ahhhhh even more fab suggestions here. Thanks everyone!

I second the pp who said it's brought up some lovely nostalgic memories. I loved the wishing chair! Happy memories of my older sister reading it to me and my other sister on holiday when we all shared a room. Also loved Anne of Green Gables. Moomins on the other hand has always provoked a strange dread in me - not sure why, ever since I was little I was scared of them! Perhaps I should revisit as a brave grown-up and heal my inner child 🤣

I live in hope of the reading bug fully taking hold of DD - I was such an avid reader as a child I read everything in the bookshelf from my dad's Dick Francis books through to the childrens encyclopedia brittanica. We do read together every night so hopefully some of that will stick, but in all honesty I suspect I could be setting a better example by reading in my moments of down time instead of mindlessly scrolling....

Rumer Godden wrote some lovely books for children in around your DD's age group. The Dolls' House, Miss Happiness and Miss Flower and Little Plum. I read them when I was about 8-9 and also a competent reader - but anything but reluctant, so my reading really stepped up. As you say, getting bitten by the reading bug is what makes the difference between a competent reader and a really fluent, confident one who knows reading is for her/him and not just other people.
