I am having issues with my eyes so am not really able to watch TV or sustain reading for too long so I've signed up for Audible
What should be my first listen?
Open to all suggestions.

Miss Benson’s Beetle by Rachel Joyce
Robert Galbraith ‘Strike’ novels best to read in order
You are Here by David Nicholls
The Salt Path by Raynor Winn - a true story that’s been made into a film to be released next year
The Women and The Nightgale by Kristin Hannah
Shantaram (probably my favourite) Gregory David Roberts
The People on Platform 5 by Clare Pooley
Love Nina by Nina Stibbe
Rachel’s Holiday by Marian Keyes
American Dirt by Jeanine Cummings

Hope this helps. A bit of a mixture

A long read is always good as the monthly credit doesn't last long on a short one.
I've enjoyed the Wolf Hall trilogy.
Strike as the poster above said.
Shorter reads I've enjoyed are the Slough House (slow horses) books.

Really depends on the genre you like. You can test them and return them as a good narrator makes a massive difference.

I've also enjoyed some of the classics. I loved Gone with the Wind, that's a bit of an epic think 40 hours plus listen.

I'm an avid audio book listener because I'm dyslexic and find it much easier than reading. I also enjoy podcasts.

I loved both michelle and Barack Obama's autobiographies. They both have lovely voices to listen too!

I find I can't listen to certain narrators

There are plenty of free audible books too. Use your credits on the long stories.

Strike books are excellent.

The Dutch house is beautifully narrated by Tom Hanks. It’s wonderful listening to him.

SuperfluousHen · 02/12/2024 22:49

any Poirot read by Hugh Fraser

any Miss Marple read by Joan Hickson

LittleSF · 02/12/2024 22:51

I really enjoy the Slow Horses books on Audible.
Louise Penny are also really well read
Any of the Ann Cleves too.

Mistletoe Murders and the Charles Paris books with Bill Nighy

What do you like to read normally? That can give you a good starting point.

A good narrator can make or break a book, so I tend to listen to the sample to see how I get on with them.

One of my favourites is Rivers of London, by Ben Aaronovitch, which is a great series.

I've also joined my local Library online and borrow audiobooks for free online using the Libby app.

And finally the Audible plus catalogue has lots to listen to, which helps stretch your credits further.

On audible originals which are ‘free’ Ive listened to the Christmas list, woman on coach D and the safe man which I though were quite good if you’ve run out of credit.

Cazziebo · 02/12/2024 23:13

Currently listening to Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays The Rent by Judi Dench and it's a joy. She is talking about all of the parts she has had in Shakespeare plays. Quite irreverent, absorbingly interesting and wickedly funny.

As I usually listen in the car, I can't follow complicated plots or lots of characters. Biographies and travel books tend to be my go to for audible.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/12/2024 23:23

What do you like? I have tons of sci fi recommendations, but there's no point if it's not your thing.

There are a lot of good free things on Audible, I really enjoyed Stephen Fry's Victorian Secrets and Edwardian Secrets. The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie is acted rather than read and I really enjoyed it.

HaloDolly · 03/12/2024 07:19

I'm listening to Wolf Hall - it is excellent, I would never have read it as a book. The narrator is superb.

I also loved Project Hail Mary (a recommendation here), the Strike series, and anything by Anthony Horowitz. Oh, and most Liane Moriarty books too Smile

tarmum · 03/12/2024 07:33

Anything by Kristin Hannah. Her books are all long (circa 15 hours) but amazing and it’s a bit like listening to a great play. Suggest starting with her newest one ‘The Women’ I think.

ComeTellTheBees · 03/12/2024 08:12

I love the Outlander series of books by Diana Gabaldon, narrated by Davina Porter who does it brilliantly. At an average 45 hours long they are worth the credit.

ElvenElf · 03/12/2024 11:57

Thanks everyone, great list to have a look at!
I had put a free one on last night at bedtime and woke at 6am with it Still playing, must have been a soothing narrator!

I haven't been entirely honest with you - Miranda Hart - so gentle and beautiful
