Can anyone suggest anything? Would love her to be wowed by something, she's not a voracious reader but loves drama & is fairly mature -she would like a horror. Any suggestions gratefully received, thanks

My DD is likes fairly dark books, has recently enjoyed Skulduggery Pleasant series, Scythe series, Amy Ewing books, Young Sherlock series, Mortal Engines series, The Alchemyst series.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle (as well as the sequels and other books my L'Engle.) AWIT isn't quite horror, it's a bit of a mix of sci-fi and fantasy, but there are some creepy bits.

The Lockwood and Co series by Jonathan Stroud is excellent.

Angela Carter?
M.R. James?

Maybe she could try them on audiobook.

My DD read the Hunger Games at that age. And she wasn't a reader at all.
But I think she enjoyed the fact that they are young adult rather than teenage or children books.

I'd recommend the Point Horror collection. I'm big on horror and my DD is following suit and has enjoyed loads of those ones.

What's an "alternative 11 year old"?

Are U.K. readers aware of the American Newbery award books? They're right for that age.

Michelle Paver's Wolf Brother series.

Darren Shan was popular in my son's peergroup.

He loved the Skulduggery Pleasant series (which is billed as dark fantasy but is also funny). Derek Landy also wrote a horror series. I think the first one was Demon Road.

I think it's quite a tricky age if they're mature readers - mine loves the world-building of fantasy and sci-fi but also doesn't mind a bit of light horror...I'd second the Phillip Reeve Mortal Engines series for this, and he enjoyed the first Lockwood one (is that a series, actually?). He found the Northern Lights trilogy a bit samey but he's enjoyed some other Phillip Pullman ones.

The Michelle Paver Wolf Brother ones didn't do it for him, which I was disappointed at as I'd LOVED her adult ghost novels.

There are 5 books in the Lockwood & Co series. There is a story arc through the series which gets more important as the series goes on.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events- very gothic.

The Murder Most Unladylike and The Ministry of Unladylike Behaviour series by Robin Stevens

Owl Service - Alan Garner

Try the red eye series - you can get all 10 for about £20 - frozen Charlotte is excellent and the rest are pretty good.
